May 1, 2011
2nd Sunday of Easter & Divine Mercy Sunday

Liturgical color: White

Readings:

1R: The First Reading for this Mass would not come from the Old Testament, but from the Book of Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament—specifically Acts 2:42-47. The community who made up the believers in Jesus Christ shared material necessities amongst themselves, and praised God together.

RP: 118 Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His love is everlasting.

2R: 1 P 1:3-9 is about praising God the Father for His Son Jesus Christ Who saved our souls.

G: John 20:19-31. This is about Jesus and Doubting Thomas. In this Gospel reading, Jesus also gives the apostles the power to forgive, and in so doing, institutes the Sacrament of Confession. “Receive the Holy Spirit; whose sins you forgive are forgiven...”

Apr 24, 2011 (Easter Sunday)

Liturgical color: White;

In selecting songs for Easter, I do encourage you to choose songs that have the word Alleluia/Aleluya in the lyrics, coz hallelujah is so characteristic of this “solemnity of solemnities.” Hallelujah expresses so much festiveness it should be maximized.

Sequence: Victimae Paschali Laudes (Wipo) You may sing this up to and including May 1, 2011, the 2nd Sunday of Easter.

Suggested Mass Line-up for April 17, 2011

Ideally you should kick off at some place other than the actual Church, ‘cause you’re gonna have a procession. Wherever that place is, the Mass actually starts there, not at the Church. And have your palms blessed there.

Reading at the blessing of palms: In Matthew 21:1-11, Jesus instructs two apostles to go get the donkey that they shall find in the next village. These two do so, and put their cloaks on top of the donkey. Riding that, Jesus triumphantly enters Jerusalem, as people lay their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches and lay them down and sing “Hosanna to the Son of David.”

Strictly speaking, dito lang talaga dapat binebless ang palaspas. Ideally dapat walang blessing ng palaspas sa ibang Misa other than the First Mass, or rather, the Mass with the procession. Kaso nga lang not all people are morning persons d ba, kaya minsan binebless pa rin ni Father ang mga palaspas sa iba ding Misa.

Songs for the Procession:

Filipino:
1. Hosanna sa Anak ni David
2. Mabuhay ang Anak ni David

English: Hosanna to the Son of David

Please note that this section/procession occurs only once during the entire day, even if you have multiple Masses. Like for instance, only before the first Mass. All other Masses after that Mass, wala ng prusisyon.

In the first Mass, please consider the above as your entrance song to acknowledge that the Mass did not begin at the Church, but at the place where the people congregated. Pagdating ninyo sa simbahan, First Reading na kaagad.

For all other Masses during the day, the Hosannas shall serve as your actual entrance song, and the common way of the order of the parts of the Mass follows.

Readings:

1R: Isaiah 50:4-7 I have not rebelled, and I have not turned back. I gave My back to those who beat Me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.

RP: 22 “My God, my God, why have You abandoned Me?”

2R: Philippians 2:6-11 Though Christ Jesus was in the form of God, He did not regard equality with with God something to be grasped. Rather, He emptied Himself, taking in the form of a slave.

G: Matthew 27:33-54 The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus

Filipino:

Walang Papuri. Walang Aleluya. Put the verse in tonong Pasyon.

P of the G:
1. Alay Kapwa (Tinio & Hontiveros)
2. Kung ‘Yong nanaisin (Francisco)
3. Panalanging Maging Bukas Palad (Rodrigo + Ramirez)

This is a good Sunday to ask permission if you could sing your best and grandest Santo/Osana. If your choir could do multiple voices, do so, or do it in Latin/Gregorian chant. Wag lang mag-over ha. We still are in Lent, when songs are toned down. If you do it acapella, that would be great, kasi technically, wala kayong instrument, so technically you are not accompanied with music that during this liturgical season should be of such quality that merely sustains the singing.

C: Sobrang dami pwede pagpilian:
1. Ang kaluluwa ko’y nauuhaw (Isidro & Que)
2. Kaibigan, Kapanalig (Ofrasio + Hontiveros)
3. P of the G 2 if not used as offertory song

English:

No Glory to God. No Alleluia. Put the verse in tonong Pasyon.

Ever heard of MOVE UP?

It is an acronym for Message is One; Voice is One, and Effectivity Goes Up. In your choice of songs, strive to choose songs that when put together express one message, and repeating the same idea gets the message across to the congregation assembled. The message will more probably be remembered.

Consider: LENT is the season most especially for:
a. increased PRAYER
b. increased PENITENCE
c. increased ALMSGIVING
d. increased SACRIFICE

Consider changing "Ngayo'y nanalig, nagmamahal sa 'Yo" to "Ngayo'y nag-aalay ng ayuno sa 'Yo."

If your choir sings the KODA, you deliver one very strong message when you sing "Ngayo'y naglilimos (nagsisisi), nagtitika (nagdarasal), nag-aalay (ng ayuno) sa 'Yo."

Communion
1. Hindi kita Malilimutan (Pagsanghan & Francisco)

1. Jesus saw him, spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and put it in his eyes.

3. Now we remain (Haas)
4. Theme from the Cardinal
5. Valleys of Green (Schutte)

Recessional
1. Taste and See (Agatep). Don’t forget to replace Stanza 1’s “My soul glories in Yahweh” and “Proclaim the greatness of Yahwheh” to “My soul glories in my Lord” and “Proclaim the greatness of my Lord.”
2. Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. Sing Stanzas 1 & 3.

I know; i know many perceive this is a Christmas song. Actually, only stanza 2 is a Christmas song. But I've always considered this as the song for the 4th Sunday of Lent.

Consider:

1. Laetere Sunday is Rose Sunday. Priests have the option to wear rose na stola rather than purple.
2. Popes traditionally give to Catholic sovereigns the gold rose.
3. Jesse's lineage in Stanza 1 is swak sa 1R.
4. Stanza 3's darkness and light is swak sa 2R.
5. Stanza 3's true man yet very God; from sin and death He saves us can be interpreted to be the song of the man born blind in G.

Kung may kokontra senyo, uhh, bahala cla hehehe. Some songs are simply better chopped.

For example, Let heaven rejoice by Dufford.

Stanzas 1 & 2 can be used from late November (kapag ang Gospels are about eschatology) well into the early part of Advent.
Stanza 3 is most appropriate for Easter season.
Stanza 4 is best for Ordinary Time and Easter season.
Stanza 5 is good for Epiphany of the Lord (Three Kings) and Christmas season.
Stanza 6 is good for Christmas midnight, day, and season.
