In his own words, St. Paul commanded the Corinthians to "Proclaim the Lord's death until He comes." [1 Cor. 11:26] These words were not a fabrication of St. Paul's mind. They were rephrased words that Jesus commanded to His followers during the Last Supper when He said, "Do this in remembrance of me." [Lk. 22:19]

Today, we are celebrating the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. This special Feast is celebrated in remembrance of Jesus who gave His life for our salvation. It is a Feast in remembrance of Jesus' command to us to celebrate the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

During His ministry on earth, Jesus said, "I am the living bread that came down from Heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." [Jn. 6:51] While these words were not understood at the time when Jesus preached them to the multitude, they were spoken in preparation for the sacrifice of His Body and Blood that He was about to offer for the sins of the world.

When the night of the Last Supper arrived, Jesus taught His followers the manner in which the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist should be celebrated. Over and above this, Jesus revealed that He would be physically present in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Before continuing, I would like to read to you the definition of the Holy Eucharist that is found in the Catholic Dictionary. This reading will spiritually enrich your minds in the knowledge and understanding of the mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
"Eucharist (Gr., eucharistia, thanksgiving), the Sacrament and sacrifice of the New Law in which Christ the Lord is Himself present, offered, and received under the species of bread and wine. The name is from the account of the last Supper."

"The Catholic Church teaches that in the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of the God-man are really, truly, substantially, and abidingly present together with His Soul and Divinity for the nourishment of souls, by reason of the Transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, which takes place in the unbloody sacrifice of the New Testament, i.e., the Mass."

"Transubstantiation is the word that was officially approved by the Council of Trent as aptly expressing the marvellous and singular changing of the entire substance of bread into the entire substance of Body of Christ, and of the entire substance of the wine into His Blood."

My brothers and sisters in Christ, keeping in mind all the undeserved graces that we receive through the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, with this Sacrament also comes responsibilities.

Our first responsibility is the manner in which we receive the Body and Body of Christ. Prior to approaching the Altar of the Lord Jesus to hold His Body and Blood in our hands, we must be in a state of grace. Those who neglect the Sacrament of Confession and receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin, they greatly offend the Lord Jesus. On this subject, St. Paul tells us,
"Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves." [1 Cor. 11:27-9]

In other words, it is not acceptable to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion when one lives in mortal sins and has no intention of changing his or her lifestyle. Those who live common-law, they are not in a state of grace and do not qualify to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The same applies to those who live in adultery, the prostitutes, practising homosexuals, those who are participating in abortions, and those who freely commit other mortals sins as if they are on holidays.

Our second responsibility is to defend our Catholic Faith. What I mean is that it is a sin against the Body and Blood of Christ and against our Faith when a Catholic receives Communion in another religion or when a Catholic invites a non- Catholic to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in the Catholic Church. According to the Canon Law of the Catholic Church, a Catholic can only receive communion from a properly ordained Catholic priest. It is a sin against the Body and Blood of Christ because other religions do not accept the truth that Jesus is present in Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist. To partake in the communion of a religion that does not accept as truth that Christ is present in the Holy Eucharist is to deny the Divine Presence of Jesus in this Sacrament.

Jesus died for our sins so we may obtain our salvation in His Most Holy Name. He gave us the means to obtain life in Him through the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. As such, we are obligated by our Faith to show the utmost reverence towards this precious Sacrament of life.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, this week, let us reflect on our actions. Are we all showing the utmost reverence to the Body and Blood of Christ? If some of us have fallen short of doing so, may this week be a time to repent of the sinful way through the grace of God. And may it be a time to once more obtain the righteousness of God through the Body and Blood of Christ so we may proclaim His death until He comes.

Brothers and sisters:
No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God
who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit
is given for some benefit.

As a body is one though it has many parts,
and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body,
so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,
and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Brothers and sisters:
Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
But you are not in the flesh;
on the contrary, you are in the spirit,
if only the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
But if Christ is in you,
although the body is dead because of sin,

Welcome my brothers and sisters in Christ to today's beautiful gathering of the faithful on the Feast of Pentecost. My welcome includes all the visitors who may have surprised us today with their presence. The door to our Church, the House of the Lord, is always open and may the Spirit of Jesus draw them back to us on many more occasions.

"Pentecost," what does it mean? The word "Pentecost" means the "fiftieth day" after Easter. Yes, seven weeks have already passed since Easter. It seems like Easter was just a couple of weeks ago, but no, it was nearly a couple of months ago.

Why do we celebrate "Pentecost?" It is because on that day nearly two thousand years ago, the Holy Catholic Church was made known to the world by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains it this way:
"The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the 'dispensation of the mystery' - the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present, and communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his Church, 'until he comes.' [1 Cor. 11:26] In this age of the Church Christ now lives and acts in and with his Church, in a new way appropriate to this new age. He acts through the sacraments in what the common Tradition of the East and the West calls 'the sacramental economy'; this is the communication (or 'dispensation') of the fruits of Christ's Paschal mystery in the celebration of the Church's 'sacramental' liturgy." "On the day of Pentecost when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end, Christ's Passover is fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, manifested, given, and communicated as a divine person: of his fullness, Christ, the Lord, pours out the Spirit in abundance." [Acts 2:33-6] (C.C.C. # 731)
"On that day (of Pentecost), the Holy Trinity is fully revealed. Since that day, the Kingdom announced by Christ has been open to those who believe in him: in the humility of the flesh and in faith, they already share in the communion of the Holy Trinity. By his coming, which never ceases, the Holy Spirit causes the world to enter into the "last days," the time of the Church, the Kingdom already inherited though not yet consummated." (C.C.C. # 732)

"The fullness of the Spirit was not to remain uniquely the Messiah's, but was to be communicated to the whole messianic people. [Ezek. 36:25-7; Joel 3:1-2] On several occasions Christ promised this outpouring of the Spirit, [Lk. 12:12; Jn. 3:5-8, 7:37-9, 16:7-15; Acts 1:8] a promise which he fulfilled first on Easter Sunday and then more strikingly at Pentecost. [Jn. 20:22; Acts 2:1-4] Filled with the Holy Spirit the apostles began to proclaim "the mighty works of God,' and Peter declared this outpouring of the Spirit to be the sign of the messianic age. [Acts 2:11. 2:17-8] Those who believed in the apostolic preaching and were baptized received the gift of the Holy Spirit in their turn." [Acts 2:38] (C.C.C. # 1287)

Slightly changing the subject, do you know that there is an association between the words "Pentecost" and "Catholic?" I am sure that most of you are aware of the fact that the word "Catholic" means "universal." While this is true, it should be applied in the sense of "according to the totality" or "in keeping with the whole." (C.C.C. # 830)

"The Church is catholic because Christ is present in her. 'Where there is Christ Jesus, there is the Catholic Church.' In her subsists the fullness of Christ's body united with its head; this implies that she receives from him 'the fullness of the means of salvation' which he has willed: correct and complete confession of faith, full sacramental life, and ordained ministry in apostolic succession. The Church was, in this fundamental sense, catholic on the day of Pentecost and will always be so until the day of Parousia." (C.C.C. # 830)

In the New Testament, "Parousia" means the Second Coming of Christ. The principal Gospel texts related to this are: Mt. 10:21-4, 16:27, 24:25; Mk. 9:38, Chapter 13; Lk. 9:26, and 21:5-33. The way in which Our Lord spoke of this Second Coming are connected with other sayings referring to the establishment of the Kingdom of God here below and to the destruction of Jerusalem, which took place in 70 A.D.

In summary, the celebration of Pentecost represents the fiftieth day on which:
1)      The Church received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit;

2) The founding of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that has the fullness of the means of salvation;

3) The beginning of the age when Jesus communicates His work of salvation through the liturgy of the Church;

4) The beginning of the dispensation of the Church Sacraments;

5) The ordained ministry in apostolic succession; and,

6) The arrival of the invisible Kingdom of God on earth in Jerusalem, a Kingdom already inherited though not yet consummated.

During today's First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we heard of the glorious arrival of the Holy Spirit in the world as Advocate, such being with Almighty power. This all began when "After His suffering Jesus presented Himself alive to His disciples by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the Kingdom of God. While staying with them, He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father." [Acts 1:3-4]

In obedience to Jesus, the disciples gathered together in Jerusalem. [Acts 2:5] Then suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. [Acts 2:2] "Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability." [Acts 3:4-5]

Naturally, the manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit drew many to the house where the disciples were gathered. And as we heard, those who came, they witnessed the disciples speaking in all languages to the extent that no matter what language anyone spoke, they could understand the disciples preaching about God's deeds of power.

When speaking of the gift of tongues through which the disciples preached about God's deeds of power, it has to be realized that this gift of the Holy Spirit was not learned knowledge and understanding. It was not like when someone has to go to school and learn something until he understands it and then he is able to explain it to others. The gift of speaking in tongues is manifested in such a way that while the one who is speaking in tongues may be speaking in his own language, those who are present, while they may speak five different languages, each and everyone of them can understand what is being said in their own language. As such, the manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit is not only working through those who speak in tongues, but only through those who hear, each hearing in his own language.

During today's Second Reading from The Letter of Paul to the Romans, we heard that those who are in the flesh, they cannot please God. [Rom. 8:8] These Words from the Holy Gospel affirm the Sacred Words of Jesus to the Samaritan woman. "The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." [Jn. 4:23-4]

My brothers and sisters in Christ, "if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." [Rom 8:13] "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit." [Rom. 8:5]

In other words, "No one can serve two masters: for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." [Mt. 6:24]

There comes a time when we must ask ourselves, "Am I spending more time towards my spiritual growth than I am spending towards gaining wealth?" If our minds are continuously preoccupied with fame, pleasures and wealth versus adoring, seeking and knowing God and obeying His commandment of love towards our neighbours, then we have a serious problem that can lead to our condemnation. There comes a time when we must allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit of God in order to qualify to be called children of God. Through our faith in Christ and the Sacrament of Baptism, we received a spirit of adoption so we may qualify to be called children of God and heirs of God, joint heirs with Christ. To inherit these titles, we must be ready to "suffer with Christ so that we may also be glorified with Him." [Rom. 8:17]

By allowing the Holy Spirit to sanctify us in Christ, He who dwelled in Jesus and who raised Him from the dead, surely, by dwelling in us, He will raise us also by giving life to our mortal bodies. In thanksgiving for the blessed hope that awaits us, we are indebted to the Holy Spirit.

During today's Gospel Reading, Jesus said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." [Jn. 14:15] In other words, if you do not keep the commandments of Jesus, then you do not love Him.

Those who keep the Words of Jesus, they are privileged to enjoy the indwelling of the fullness of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. [Jn. 14:23] Not only do they enjoy the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but Jesus promised that the Father and He would come and make their home in them.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, Jesus and the Father gave us the Holy Spirit so we may be sanctified. Our sanctification is achieved through our daily personal communion with God and the Church. As we spiritually grow in Christ, God is pleased and the Holy Catholic Church benefits. If we receive gifts as the disciples received gifts on Pentecost, it is for the benefit of the whole Body of Christ. Through the growth of the Body of Christ, we grow alongside the other faithful members of the Church. If the Body of Christ suffers because of the neglect of some, we all suffer.

This week, let us reflect upon the purpose of the Holy Spirit in the Church. As Advocate, what can the Holy Spirit do for the Church and for each and everyone of us? In view of what He can do, let us ask ourselves if we have allowed the Holy Spirit to freely flow through us so He can guide and teach us according to the purpose that He has been sent by the Lord God.

In the first book, Theophilus,
I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught
until the day he was taken up,
after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit
to the apostles whom he had chosen.
He presented himself alive to them
by many proofs after he had suffered,
appearing to them during forty days
and speaking about the kingdom of God.
While meeting with them,
he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem,
but to wait for “the promise of the Father

for John baptized with water,

When they had gathered together they asked him,
“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,

what are the riches of glory
in his inheritance among the holy ones,

from the foundation of the world.
But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages
to take away sin by his sacrifice.

and after this the judgment, so also Christ,
offered once to take away the sins of many,
will appear a second time, not to take away sin
but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since through the blood of Jesus
we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary
by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil,
that is, his flesh,
and since we have a great priest over the house of God, “
let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust,
with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience

Gospel                                                            LK 24:46-53
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.
And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you;
but stay in the city
until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Then he led them out as far as Bethany,
raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them
and was taken up to heaven.
They did him homage
and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and they were continually in the temple praising God.

Reflections/Homily of the Readings

While blessing them, He was carried up to Heaven. Welcome my brothers and sisters in Christ to today's celebration of the Feast the "Ascension of the Lord" Jesus.

While reflecting on this Feast that the Holy Catholic Church has found worthy of including in the Liturgical Calendar, I asked myself, "What does the Ascension of Jesus mean to us?" After spiritual reflections, I was able to perceive some important factors that are associated with the Ascension of the Lord Jesus.

1. First of all, the visible departure of the Lord concluded the Risen Jesus' sojourn on earth. For 40 days after His Resurrection, Jesus had been appearing to many of His followers and spoke to them about the Kingdom of God. [Acts 1:3] The days of His apparitions had come to an end.

If we are to take Chapter 24 of the Gospel of Luke or Chapter 20 of the Gospel of John as they stand, we would get the impression that all three, the Resurrection, the Ascension and the giving of the Holy Spirit happened on the same day. But this is not so. As I have just mentioned, there was "40 days" [Acts 1:3] between the day of the Resurrection and the day of the Ascension. This knowledge is made known to us by St. Luke who also wrote "The Acts of the Apostles."

2. Secondly, I have come to perceive that the Ascension of Jesus completes our understanding of the awesomeness of the glorious Resurrection. Because the Lord Jesus was raised to Heaven after His glorious Resurrection, it is made known to us that our blessed hope of eternal life does not consist of dwelling in this world, but rather in Heaven.

3. Thirdly, the Ascension of the Lord affirms that Jesus was the Messiah. As the Gospel of Luke tells us, "He was carried up into Heaven." [Lk. 24:51] The questions to ask here are, "Who carried Him?" and "Why did they carry Him?" It was the angels who carried Jesus to Heaven because they were created to "adore Him" [Heb. 1:6] and serve Him.

In concluding the writing of his Gospel, St. Luke emphasized that the proclaiming of repentance and the forgiveness of sins was to be proclaimed in His Name. [Lk. 24:47] This emphasis, in "His Name," shifts the faith of the believers from Yahweh, the God of the Old Testament, to the divinity of Jesus. "For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell bodily." [Col. 1:19, 2:9]

4. Next, the Ascension of the Lord Jesus opened the door for the beginning of the Divine ministry of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had told His disciples not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Heavenly Father. [Lk. 24:49; Acts 1:4]

5. Fifth, during the Gospel Reading, we heard that Jesus raised His hands and blessed His disciples. [Lk. 24:50] This action echoes a similar action that is found in the Book of Sirach in the Old Testament.
"The leader of his brothers and the pride of his people was the high priest, Simon son of Onias..." [Sir. 50:1] "Then Simon came down and raised his hands over the whole congregation of Israelites to pronounce the blessing of the Lord with his lips, and to glory in his name." [Sir. 50:20]
From this passage, we come to perceive that the blessing of Jesus was not just an ordinary blessing. It was a blessing from the True High Priest, He who is a priest forever, according to the Order of Melchizedek. [Heb. 5:6, 7:17, 7:21]

6. Sixth, from the moment of the Ascension, the living hope of all Christians has been for the Second Coming of Christ, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him. At the moment of the Ascension of the Lord, the countdown began. "About that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." [Mt. 24:36] "Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." [Mt. 24:44]

7. Seventh, once the Lord Jesus had ascended into Heaven, He sat at the right hand of God. [Mk. 16:19; Rom. 8:34; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3, 8:1, 10:12; 1 Pet. 3:22; Acts 2:33, 7:56-7] Since then, He has been the Mediator between God and humankind. [1 Tim. 2:5] "Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry, and to that degree He is the Mediator of a better Covenant, which has been enacted through better promises." [Heb. 8:6]

8. Eight, from the moment of the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven, His glorious reign began as the King of kings. Through the Resurrection of Jesus, death was conquered. "The great dragon was thrown down (out of Heaven), that ancient serpent who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world." [Rev. 12:9]

Following the glorious moment of the Ascension of Jesus, the souls that dwelled in Limbo were finally released "Christ was the first fruits of those who had died." [1 Cor. 15:20]
In theological usage the name "Limbo" has two meanings. The first is the temporary place or state of the souls of the just who, although purified from sin, were excluded from the beatific vision until Christ's triumphant ascension into Heaven (the "limbus patrum").

According to apocryphal Jewish literature that refers to the abode of the departed just, the following condition of the souls is generally agreed upon:

- that their condition is one of happiness,
- that it is temporary, and
- that it is to be replaced by a condition of final and permanent bliss when the Messianic Kingdom is established.

9. Ninth, while Jesus has ascended into Heaven, His Divine Presence continues to be with us where He is adored daily in the Sacred Tabernacles of the Catholic Churches.

The last verse from today's Gospel Reading states, "And they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the Temple blessing God." [Lk. 24:53] What is stressed here is that the believers were "continually" in the Temple and their "great joy."

From this passage, it can be perceived that the physical Church mirrors the invisible Kingdom of God. The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church mirrors the new Jerusalem and the new Temple. The Divine Presence of Jesus in the Sacred Tabernacles mirrors His Divine Presence among the saints and the angels in the Kingdom of God.

Why is there great joy? Because the celebration of the Holy Mass and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist mirror the Heavenly Feast in which Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the saints and all the angels are partaking. To receive Jesus in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is to "worship God in spirit and truth." [Jn. 4:24]

My brothers and sisters in Christ, the aforementioned raises the importance of the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord above the fact that the Lord Jesus was carried up to Heaven by the angels. While the Resurrection was the turning point in history regarding salvation, the Ascension was the turning point in history regarding the beginning of the Kingdom of God.

Following the glorious Ascension of the Lord, the endless righteous souls who had died from the days of Adam to the days of Jesus, all were finally released from their prison in Limbo. Finally, they could enjoy the eternal Presence of Christ the King. For these souls, the Resurrection of Jesus prepared the way for their freedom from a dwelling where they did not enjoy the beatific vision of Christ.

These are reasons to celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. There may be more than those that I have mentioned. But these are sufficient for us to rejoice, not only for ourselves, but for the countless souls of the days of the Old Testament who finally entered the Kingdom of God.
