Ash Wednesday

Miyerkules, 9 Marso 2011
Miyerkules ng Abo

Readings

1R: Joel 2:12-18 Rend your hearts.

RP:51 “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.”

2R: 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2 Be reconciled to God.

G: Matthew 6 says Be careful not to make a show of your righteousness.
1. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you.
2. When you pray, do not be like hypocrites who stand and pray in the synagogues.
3. When you fast, do not look gloomy.

Some catechesis: A few things quite interesting about Ash Wednesday:
1. The set of readings for Ash Wednesday never changes, year in and year out. Palaging itong set na ito.
2. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence.

a. Fasting means having only one full meal during the whole day. The law of fasting binds Catholics 18 to 59 years old.
b. Abstinence means not having meat. The law of abstinence binds Catholics 14 years old and above.

3. It is one of few occasions that fall on a weekday (Wednesday) pero merong 2nd Reading. Technically, it is neither a Solemnity nor a Feast.
4. From Genesis 3:19 we can read, "You are dust and to dust you shall return."
5. The priest, deacon, or lay minister who applies the ash on your forehead says, "Repent and believe in the Gospel." In Filipino, "Magbagong buhay ka at sa Mabuting Balita sumampalataya." The response to this is very long and must be memorized: "Amen."
6. Ang mga abo na ilalagay sa noo ay mula sa mga sinunog na palaspas na ginamet nung Palm Sunday nung nakaraang taon.
7. Almsgiving does not just mean dole-out sa mga pulubi sa kalsada. Concretely put, almsgiving refers to the Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, pray for the dead.

Important Concepts/Ideas:
1. Repentance/Penitence/Reconciliation/Confession/Penance
2. Abstinence/Fasting
3. Almsgiving
4. Praying
5. Repentance

Notes:
1. Turn down the volume. Musical instruments during Lent should give only the bare minimum/necessary support to the singing. Sustenance lang. Kailangan kasi maramdaman and ma-realize ng mga taong assembled that this is a season very different from other liturgical seasons. (Parallel with this toned-down instruments, wala ding flowers sa altar.)
2. No Gloria and No Alleluia

3. A modified version of Unang Alay (Magnaye) para merong Lenten notion:
Lent is about increased prayer, almsgiving, penance, mortification, fasting.

...Tanda ng bawat pusong, ‘pagkat inibig Mo,
Ngayo’y nagtitika’t nagdarasal sa ‘Yo.
