First Reading Is 50:5-9a
The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear;
and I have not rebelled,
have not turned back.
I gave my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who plucked my beard;
my face I did not shield
from buffets and spitting.

The Lord GOD is my help,
therefore I am not disgraced;
I have set my face like flint,
knowing that I shall not be put to shame.
He is near who upholds my right;
if anyone wishes to oppose me,
let us appear together.
Who disputes my right?
Let that man confront me.
See, the Lord GOD is my help;
who will prove me wrong?
Responsorial Psalm Ps 114:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9
R. (9) I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
or:
R.
Alleluia.
I love the LORD because he has heard
my voice in supplication,
Because he has inclined his ear to me
the day I called.
R.
I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
or:
R.
Alleluia.
The cords of death encompassed me;
the snares of the netherworld seized upon me;
I fell into distress and sorrow,
And I called upon the name of the LORD,
"O LORD, save my life!"
R.
I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
or:
R.
Alleluia.
Gracious is the LORD and just;
yes, our God is merciful.
The LORD keeps the little ones;
I was brought low, and he saved me.
R.
I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
or:
R.
Alleluia.
For he has freed my soul from death,
my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
I shall walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
R.
I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
or:
R.
Alleluia.
Second Reading  Jas 2:14-18
What good is it, my brothers and sisters,
if someone says he has faith but does not have works?
Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear
and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them,
"Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, "
but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it?
So also faith of itself,
if it does not have works, is dead.

Indeed someone might say,
"You have faith and I have works."
Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
Gospel Mk 8:27-35
Jesus and his disciples set out
for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples,
"Who do people say that I am?"
They said in reply,
"John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others one of the prophets."
And he asked them,
"But who do you say that I am?"
Peter said to him in reply,
"You are the Christ."
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.

He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed, and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,
"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake
and that of the gospel will save it."

Reflections of the Readings (Sept. 16)
Good morning to all! May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all as you listen and hear the message of today's Scripture readings.

From today's First Reading, we can easily perceive that the great prophet Isaiah had his spiritual mind set on Divine things. As the ambassador of the Lord, from his mouth flowed prophetic words of the sufferings and death of the Lord Jesus that were to occur approximately seven hundred and fifty years later.

During this spiritual manifestation, Isaiah said, "The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting."

From these holy words, we can perceive that it is a reference to the heavenly Father sending His only begotten Son Jesus as the promised Messiah. We can perceive the obedience of the Lord Jesus who was not rebellious against the Divine Will of the heavenly Father. We remember the passion of Jesus that is found in the Gospel of Matthew where it says, "Then they spat in his face and struck him; and some slapped him." [Mt. 16:67] We remember the insults again His Divine Person when the soldiers said, "Prophecy to us, you Messiah!" Who is it that struck you?" [Mt. 16:68]

Isaiah continued by saying, "The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near."

Truly, the Lord Jesus was exonerated. "He is the Head of the Body, the Church; He is the beginning, the Firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him God was pleased to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in Heaven, by making peace through the Blood of His Cross." [Col. 1:18-20]

Next, from the mouth of the prophet came questions, "Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty?"

Who will stand by Jesus? Let them come forward and stand beside Him. Who are His enemies? Let them challenge Him. It is the Lord God alone who will help Him. Who dares to declare the Lord Jesus guilty of any crime?

As the Holy Bible tells us, the disciples of Jesus did not stand beside the Lord when He was arrested. They deserted Him and fled. [Mt. 26:56] But things had "to be this way for the scriptures to be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way." [Mt. 26:54] In the end, after Christ was buried, it is God alone who helped the Lord by raising Him from the dead. [1 Cor. 6:14] All of this had to happen for our sake. The heavenly Father made Jesus to be sin, He who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. [2 Cor. 5:21]

Through these accurate prophecies, we can perceive how the great prophet Isaiah was filled with the Holy Spirit. His example of living faith tells us to set our hearts on Divine things so we too can enjoy a priceless personal relationship with the Lord God as he did. When one sets his heart on Divine things, the Holy Spirit inspires him according to the Divine Plan for the benefit of the individual and the Church.

During today's Second Reading, we heard St. James speaking on the subject of faith. What is faith? Is it human faith, such as many enjoy by only believing in Jesus Christ for their salvation and then resting the rest of their lives? Or is it a faith that involves setting our hearts on Divine things?

According to St. James, "What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you?"

If we see someone in need, a relative, a parishioner, a neighbour, or even a stranger, and we say, "Go in peace." without lifting a finger to reach out and help, what good is that? Is that a spiritual action? Does it equal the love that Jesus had for others?

What good is faith if we neglect the promise that we made during the Sacrament of Confirmation? "By the strength of the Holy Spirit," we were commanded "to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross." (C.C.C. # 1303)

"So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead."

Someone might say to me, "I have faith and you have works as a priest." In answer to this, I say, "Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith."

True faith is living faith! It is a faith that bears fruit of the indwelling Holy Spirit. There is no such thing as an indwelling Holy Spirit who is dormant. The grace of God is always at work! As such, the Holy Spirit always moves the soul to desire to be sanctified so it can shine in love towards others by charitable acts; so it can share the good news; so it can draw others to their living faith in Christ. These are some of the signs of living faith.

If we do not have these signs, we do not have the Holy Spirit. If we do not have the Holy Spirit, we do not bear fruits, these being works of God manifested through us. And, if we do not bear fruits, we do not have faith. For faith without works is dead!

These results can only be achieved by continuously, day and night, setting our minds on spiritual things. These results can only be achieved when we obey the commandments of God through the teachings of Jesus Christ in humility and servitude.

As we heard during today's Gospel Reading, on their way to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" They responded by saying that some believed He was John the Baptist, other Elijah and still others, one of the prophets.

From these answers, it is clear that the people had their minds set on spiritual things, being able to make an association between the works of Jesus versus the works of those previously mentioned.

When the disciples were asked, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Messiah." In this case, not only did Peter have his mind set on spiritual things, but the grace of God was also at work through him by the power of the Holy Spirit. For no one can learn and know Divine truths unless inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Shortly after, the Lord Jesus began to teach that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Peter was offended by these words. Reverting to the blindness of the worldly mind that dwells in the human nature, he took Jesus aside and began to rebuke Him. Consequently, the Lord Jesus rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things, but on human things."

Here we see the weakness of man! While he has the capability to walk his living faith by continuously keeping his mind on Divine things, the moment his comfort zone is threatened, he reverts to his old self. He immediately lets go of his spiritual ways when his peers, his wealth, his fame, his pleasures, or other worldly ways threaten his stability in this world. He forgets that the Holy Spirit is like the wind. He blows where He chooses. You hear the sound of the wind, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. [Jn. 3:8]

To set one's mind on Divine things, one must let himself flow with the Holy Spirit. He must deny himself, take up his cross and follow the Lord Jesus.

For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for the sake of Jesus, and for the sake of the Gospel, will save it.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, are your minds set on Divine things? Do you have a living faith in Christ, one that bears holy works? This week, reflect upon these questions. And, if there is a necessity to do so, change your lives so the Holy Spirit may freely flow through each and every one of you.

First Reading                          Is 35:4-7a
Thus says the LORD:
Say to those whose hearts are frightened:
Be strong, fear not!
Here is your God,
he comes with vindication;
with divine recompense
he comes to save you.
Then will the eyes of the blind be opened,
the ears of the deaf be cleared;
then will the lame leap like a stag,
then the tongue of the mute will sing.
Streams will burst forth in the desert,
and rivers in the steppe.
The burning sands will become pools,
and the thirsty ground, springs of water.
Responsorial Psalm                     Ps 146:7, 8-9, 9-10
R. (1b) Praise the Lord, my soul!
or:
R.
Alleluia.
The God of Jacob keeps faith forever,
secures justice for the oppressed,
gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets captives free.
R.
Praise the Lord, my soul!
or:
R.
Alleluia.
The LORD gives sight to the blind;
the LORD raises up those who were bowed down.
The LORD loves the just;
the LORD protects strangers.
R.
Praise the Lord, my soul!
or:
R.
Alleluia.
The fatherless and the widow the LORD sustains,
but the way of the wicked he thwarts.
The LORD shall reign forever;
your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia.
R.
Praise the Lord, my soul!
or:
R.
Alleluia.
Second Reading                        Jas 2:1-5
My brothers and sisters, show no partiality
as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.
For if a man with gold rings and fine clothes
comes into your assembly,
and a poor person in shabby clothes also comes in,
and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes
and say, "Sit here, please, "
while you say to the poor one, "Stand there, " or "Sit at my feet, "
have you not made distinctions among yourselves
and become judges with evil designs?

Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters.
Did not God choose those who are poor in the world
to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom
that he promised to those who love him?
Gospel                                 Mk 7:31-37
Again Jesus left the district of Tyre
and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
into the district of the Decapolis.
And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment
and begged him to lay his hand on him.
He took him off by himself away from the crowd.
He put his finger into the man's ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
"Ephphatha!"-- that is, "Be opened!" --
And immediately the man's ears were opened,
his speech impediment was removed,
and he spoke plainly.
He ordered them not to tell anyone.
But the more he ordered them not to,
the more they proclaimed it.
They were exceedingly astonished and they said,
"He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."

Reflections of the Readings (September 9)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome my friend to the House of Jesus! What happens when a doctor, a lawyer or a mechanic explains something to a five year old child while using terms that apply to their trade? The child does not have a clue as to what they are talking about! Why? Because the child does not have the faculty to understand.

It is the same when Christians speak of spiritual things to non- believers. Not having the faculty of a spiritual heart, they are blind to all Divine works that are manifested. Not having received the grace of God because they have hardened their heart, "they listen, but never understand, they look but never perceive." [Mt. 13:14]

But we Christians, our eyes are blessed. [Mt. 13:16] Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we have received our new creation [Gal. 6:15] (C.C.C. # 1265) that endows us with eyes that see and ears that hear. [Mt. 13:16] While our worldly nature resists what is spiritual, by the grace of God, if we want to, we can immediately switch to spiritual thinking so we can understand the richness of all spiritual things.

Having said this, I pray that today, before coming to Church, all of you have switched to your spiritual thinking so you may all be spiritually enriched by the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Today's First Reading from the Book of Isaiah began by saying, "Say to those who are of a fearful heart, 'Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.'"

In the days of this great prophet, the chosen people of God continuously lived in fear of the Lord. They had just cause to fear Him for they all knew how their ancestors had endured the wrath of God when they had hardened their hearts and disobeyed His Commandments. At the same time, they also knew that as long as they obeyed the Lord God, they would receive all kinds of blessings.

Now Isaiah is telling everybody, "Hey, everyone, be strong, do not fear! The Lord is coming with a vengeance, to repay or reward. He is coming to save you." Place yourselves in their shoes and I can assure you that this was not good news to some of them. Many of those poor souls must have been shaking in fear of the Lord, especially the dishonest tax-collectors who were pocketing the money that they took from the poor. How will God judge everyone? Which one will be saved? Which one will be punished?

Thinking worldly, little did they realize that through the incarnation of God in Jesus, the Lord was coming to reclaim His Kingdom from the prince of darkness. The vengeance of the Lord was not against the people, but against spiritual forces, against Satan and his legions of fallen angels. [Lk. 21:22, 21:32; Rev. 12:10] The Lord Jesus was coming to deliver His people from their exile in the darkness as slaves of sin. He was coming to offer the new birth by water and Spirit. [Jn. 3:3, 5] Through Jesus, "the grace of God would appear, bringing salvation to all," [Tit. 2:11]

What sign did Isaiah give for one to know when the Messiah will be arriving? "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped: then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy."

Prior to the coming of Jesus, many prophets have come and gone. Though many of them, the grace of God was manifested and miraculous wonders were seen. But, one sign stood out, that particular one being reserved for Jesus. That sign was, "The blind shall see." This is why the New Testament emphasizes so much that Jesus healed the blind in fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament. This particular sign was expected of the Messiah. It was like a Divine Trademark.

When John the Baptist was in prison, he sent his disciples to Jesus to ask him, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" [Mt. 11:2-3] "Jesus answered them, 'Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed...'" [Mt. 11:4-5] Notice the first thing that Jesus made reference to, It was that the blind receive their sight! This was the expected sign of the arrival of the Messiah.

It should be noted that the words, "The blind shall see." had two meanings. In the first sense, its meaning was literal and worldly, the blind being able to see. In the second sense, it was a reference to the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit and the spiritual heart that is received through our new creation during the Sacrament of Baptism. Through the grace of God, the spiritual heart has the faculty to perceive what is spiritual. It perceives the mysteries of God that have been revealed through Jesus Christ.

Isaiah continued by saying, "For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert: the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water."

Four of the words that Isaiah used are symbolic of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. These words were: waters, streams, pool and springs. In other words, the Holy Spirit will be sent (shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert [Jn. 7:38]). Those who thirst for spiritual knowledge shall drink (the burning sand shall become a pool). And they shall go forth to share the Gospel of Jesus with others (thirsty ground springs of water [Jn. 4:14]).

Having received our new creations, we are called to act as spiritual beings, to be holy as the heavenly angels are holy. As St. James teaches us through the Second Reading, we are not to show favorism to anyone. We are not to judge with evil thoughts by elevating a person in fine clothes over and above a poor person in dirty clothes.

God does not show favorism to anyone. For "the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy." [Jas. 3:17]

That is why God has chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?" Did Jesus not say, "Blessed are the poor in spirit." [Mt. 5:3; Lk. 6:20]

The poor in spirit, having a spiritual heart, embrace the spirit of poverty, being totally detached from the world. While they are in the world, they do not belong to the world. [Jn. 17:16]

They abide by the words of John, "Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world; for all that is in the world - the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches - comes not from the Father but from the world. And the world and its desires are passing away, but those who do the will of God live forever." [1 Jn. 2:15-7]

Did Jesus not say, "For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? (soul)" [Mt. 16:26] And did He not also say, "Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven." " ...It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God." [Mt. 19:23-4]

As a general rule, the worldly mind of the rich man is preoccupied with making money, investment, cutting corners to save, paying low wages to increase profits, giving to charities in return for public recognition, etc... All these things oppose the spiritual ways of God. In truth, his spirituality is dead. He does not have the spirit of poverty.

Today's Gospel Reading is a confirmation of the many prophecies that are found in the Old Testament, including those mentioned earlier during the First Reading. In the words of Jesus, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you - that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled. [Lk. 24:44]

Jesus miraculously healed the man who was deaf and who had an impediment in his speech. Astounded beyond measure, those who were present said, "He has done everything well!" [Mk. 7:37] Indeed, Jesus has done everything well.

Not only has Jesus physically healed the man, but through His Blood, He has renewed mankind. He has created a new world, the Kingdom of God, through the Sacrament of Baptism. By the grace of God the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are new creations, a holy nation, a holy priesthood, holy children of God. The gift of our new heart is the proof of such. For while we can perceive spiritual things with our new heart through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, those who are not of God, they cannot perceive what we perceive. We are blessed!

"But there are many other things Jesus has done. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written." [Jn. 21:25]

My brothers and sisters in Christ, this week, let us reflect on what Jesus has done for us. Let us reflect on the words of the crowd when they said, "He has done everything well." [Mk. 7:37] And may the grace of God always be with us so we will never forget the abundance of treasures that we have received through Jesus Christ and the power of His Spirit."
