First Reading                                  Wis 7:7-11
I prayed, and prudence was given me;
I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.
I preferred her to scepter and throne,
and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her,
nor did I liken any priceless gem to her;
because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand,
and before her, silver is to be accounted mire.
Beyond health and comeliness I loved her,
and I chose to have her rather than the light,
because the splendor of her never yields to sleep.
Yet all good things together came to me in her company,
and countless riches at her hands.
Responsorial Psalm                            Ps 90:12-13, 14-15, 16-17
R. (14) Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Return, O LORD! How long?
Have pity on your servants!
R.
Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
Fill us at daybreak with your kindness,
that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.
Make us glad, for the days when you afflicted us,
for the years when we saw evil.
R.
Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
Let your work be seen by your servants
and your glory by their children;
and may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours;
prosper the work of our hands for us!
Prosper the work of our hands!
R.
Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
Second Reading                                         Heb 4:12-13
Brothers and sisters:
Indeed the word of God is living and effective,
sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow,
and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.
No creature is concealed from him,
but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him
to whom we must render an account.
Gospel Mk 10:17-30
As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up,
knelt down before him, and asked him,
"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good?
No one is good but God alone.
You know the commandments: You shall not kill;
you shall not commit adultery;
you shall not steal;
you shall not bear false witness;
you shall not defraud;
honor your father and your mother."
He replied and said to him,
"Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth."
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him,
"You are lacking in one thing.
Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor
and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."
At that statement his face fell,
and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,
"How hard it is for those who have wealth
to enter the kingdom of God!"
The disciples were amazed at his words.
So Jesus again said to them in reply,
"Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves,
"Then who can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them and said,
"For human beings it is impossible, but not for God.
All things are possible for God."
Peter began to say to him,
"We have given up everything and followed you."
Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you,
there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands
for my sake and for the sake of the gospel
who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:
houses and brothers and sisters
and mothers and children and lands,
with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come."
Or Mk 10:17-27

Reflections/Homily

"Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" [Mk. 10:17] What was the man asking Jesus during today's Gospel Reading? Was he asking how to obtain eternal life, or how to enter the Kingdom of God, or how to be saved? When Jesus said, "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!" [Mk. 10:17], our Lord was certainly referring to the Kingdom of God. When the disciples asked, "Then who can be saved?" [Mark 10:26], they were certainly referring to salvation.

In the Divine progressive Plan of Salvation, it is important for us to know the difference between obtaining the gift of eternal life versus the gift of salvation. Those who are in Hell have eternal life, but they do not have salvation. Surely, eternal life alone is not what the man was asking Jesus. Having improperly expressed himself as we frequently do, he asked the wrong question but got the right answer. For Jesus knows the hearts of all and He knew what the man was asking, how to inherit the Kingdom of God, such embracing salvation.

What does the Divine progressive Plan of Salvation involve? There are a number of steps in this Divine progressive Plan!

First of all, by the grace of the heavenly Father through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are called towards the Lord Jesus. [Tit. 2:11] "There is salvation in no one else (but Jesus), for there is no other names under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved." [Acts 4:12] We cannot be saved by living a good life. Nor can we be saved by praying to one or more of the saints. None of them have the power to save us. Nor will anyone be saved by bypassing Jesus and going straight to the Father. God the Father has commanded that we be drawn to His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Secondly, once we have accepted Jesus in our lives, we are called to be baptized so we may become members of the Body of Christ on earth. Before receiving the Sacrament of Baptism, if we are of age, we are called to sincerely repent of our previous sins.

Through the Sacrament of Baptism, in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, God knowing and judging our thoughts and intentions of the heart, His Word that is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, pierces until it divides our soul from our spirit. [Heb. 4:12] So powerful is the Word of God, that during the Sacrament of Baptism, it separates the soul from the human spirit.

At that moment, in fulfillment of the Old Testament promises of God the Father, [Ezek. 11:19-20; 18:31, 36:26-7] we are born again of water and Spirit. [Jn. 3:3, 5] Our old spiritual nature dies, is buried with Christ and is replaced by a new creation. Then, we are raised with Christ in the newness of life. [Rom. 6:4; Col. 2:12]

The new creation that is received bears the seed of God. [1 Jn. 3:9, 5:18] The new creation is everything! [Gal. 6:15] So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!" [2 Cor. 5:17]

Through the Sacrament of Baptism, the new Christian receives the hope of salvation through Christ and eternal life in the Kingdom of God.

If the Christian was to immediately die after having received the Sacrament of Baptism, being in a state of grace, his soul would immediately enter the Kingdom of God to enjoy the eternal beatific vision of God.

Over and above becoming a new creation during the Sacrament of Baptism, the newly baptized Christian became a Living Temple of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Through this gift, the Christian came to know the laws of God and obey them. [Jer. 31:31, 33; Ezek. 11:19-20; 18:31, 36:26-7; 1 Cor. 3:16]

Thirdly, having become a new creation, after having received the Sacrament of Baptism, the Christian is called to live a newness of life in Christ. In other words, by the grace of God, baptized Christians are called to live their faith in Christ by shining in an abundance of fruits. They have to perform works that are worthy of being called Christians. For faith without works is dead. [Jas. 2:26] They are called to obey Jesus through the authority of His Church that He has instituted on earth, doing so in humility and servitude.

When we live our faith in Christ, we know the Commandments. We do not murder. We do not commit adultery. We do not steal. We do not bear false witness. We do not defraud. We honour our father and mother.

We also share our wealth with the poor. We feed the hungry, tend to the sick, visit the prisoners, forgive our neighbours, do not judge others, etc... We lives for Christ, with Christ and in Christ. We become as a shining light in the world. [Mt. 5:14, 16]

Fourthly, because we still have the worldly nature within us, we must continuously repent of our sins so we can maintain our righteousness in the eyes of God. How do we do that? It is through the Sacrament of Confession! Through the forgiveness of sins in the Name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we as sinners regain the righteousness that we enjoyed when we received the Sacrament of Baptism. "If we say that we have not sinned, we make Jesus a liar, and His Word is not in us." [1 Jn. 1:8]

Fifth, being in a state of grace, we are called to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Jesus said, "I am the living bread that came down from Heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." [Jn. 6:49] Affirming this truth, He added, "Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them." [Jn. 6:53-6]

The Holy Eucharist in which dwells the Divine Presence of the fullness of God in Jesus is the Bread of Life. To have life in us as sons and daughters of God, we must partake in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist on a regular basis. Jesus promised us, "... because I live, you will live." [Jn. 14:19] "For in him we live and move and have our being..." [Acts 17:28] Through the generous grace of our heavenly Father, we come to Jesus, a living stone, through rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight, and like living stones, let ourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. [1 Pet. 2:4-5]

Having done all this, we reach the sixth and last step. We depart from our mortal physical bodies to be judged by God for our every thoughts, words and actions. For those of us who have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confession and the Holy Eucharist, and have persevered in our living faith through good works that are manifestations of the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, we finally reach our blessed hope. We are blessed with the gift of salvation which qualifies us to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven as children of God.

My brother and sisters, there is no other way to obtain our salvation! Indeed it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God. For the riches of this world draw us away from our spiritual obligations towards God, towards others, and towards our own souls, away from the Sacrament of the Holy Catholic Church.

Today's First Reading spoke of the wealth that is found in wisdom. She is more valuable than health, beauty and even the light. Her unending radiance guides us towards the Lord Jesus who is the way, and the truth, and the life. [Jn. 14:6] Wisdom guides us towards the Church Sacraments that justify us and bless us with the gift of salvation. Without wisdom, we are spiritually blind. In spiritual blindness, we become as lost sheeps who walk aimlessly, waiting for the wolves to devour them.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, this week, let us ask ourselves, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" By this, I do mean eternal life that leads one to Hell. We all know that easy way. I am referring to the eternal life that leads towards salvation and the Kingdom of God. Let us ask our heavenly Father in the Name of Jesus for the permanent indwelling gift of wisdom so we may never deter from our blessed hope. May the grace of God richly shine on each and everyone of you who will take the time to make this spiritual request.

First Reading                                           Gn 2:18-24
The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him."
So the LORD God formed out of the ground
various wild animals and various birds of the air,
and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name.
The man gave names to all the cattle,
all the birds of the air, and all wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man,
and while he was asleep,
he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib
that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:
"This one, at last, is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called 'woman, '
for out of 'her man' this one has been taken."
That is why a man leaves his father and mother
and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh.
Responsorial Psalm                                      Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6
R. (cf. 5) May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.
Blessed are you who fear the LORD,
who walk in his ways!
For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork;
blessed shall you be, and favored.
R.
May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
in the recesses of your home;
your children like olive plants
around your table.
R.
May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.
Behold, thus is the man blessed
who fears the LORD.
The LORD bless you from Zion:
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.
R.
May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.
May you see your children's children.
Peace be upon Israel!
R.
May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.
Second Reading                                                  Heb 2:9-11
Brothers and sisters:
He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, "
that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

For it was fitting that he,
for whom and through whom all things exist,
in bringing many children to glory,
should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering.
He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated
all have one origin.
Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them 'brothers.'
Gospel Mk 10:2-16
The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked,
"Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?"
They were testing him.
He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?"
They replied,
"Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce
and dismiss her."
But Jesus told them,
"Because of the hardness of your hearts
he wrote you this commandment.
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate."
In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.
He said to them,
"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her;
and if she divorces her husband and marries another,
she commits adultery."

And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them,
but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,
"Let the children come to me;
do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to
such as these.
Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child
will not enter it."
Then he embraced them and blessed them,
placing his hands on them.
Or Mk 10:2-12
He said to them,
"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her;
and if she divorces her husband and marries another,
she commits adultery."

Reflections of the Readings… (October 7)

Good morning! Is everyone ready for a sermon on the Sacredness of the Sacrament of Marriage? Today, I am going to touch on the subject of marriage and divorce. Considering the high percentage of divorces throughout the world, this homily should be of great interest to everyone. It will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of what the Holy Bible tells us about the Sacrament of Marriage.

The Holy Catholic Church teaches us that the Sacrament of Marriage is an indissoluble union, contracted by mutual consent, between one man and one woman, in a lawful manner, by which they are obliged to live together all the days of their life.

Now, marriage is not something that was invented by man. Instituted by God Himself, it has been present since the dawn of history, since the creation of the first man and woman.

In the beginning, God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone." [Gen. 2:18] "So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of the ribs of Adam and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, 'This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken.' Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife and they become one flesh." [Gen. 2:21-5]

In marriage, the man and the woman become one. They belong to each other. The union between a man and a woman in the Sacrament of Marriage is compared to the union between Christ and the Church.

"Husbands must love their wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind - yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, because we are members of the body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." [Mk. 10:6-8; Eph. 5:25-31]

"The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does." [1 Cor. 7:4] "The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband." [1 Cor. 7:3] In the Sacrament of Marriage, being one as Christ is one with the Church, perfect harmony must exist. Both parties, in the fullness of love, must give and take according to each other's pleasure. Neither one owns the other.

In their conjugal rights, they should "not deprive one another except perhaps by agreement for a set time, to devote themselves to prayer, and then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt them because of their lack of self-control." [1 Cor. 7:5]

"So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." [Mt. 19:6] Today, during the Gospel Reading, we heard Jesus say, "Whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery." [Mt. 19:9; Lk. 16:18]

What exactly does this passage mean? To fully understand it, in view of what the Gospel of Mark adds to the Word of the Lord, we come to the realization that Jesus was answering two questions. First of all, Jesus was saying that a man can only divorce his wife if she commits adultery. Secondly, if the man remarries another woman as a consequence of putting away his wife, he commits adultery. In other words, neither one of them are at liberty of getting married again.

On this subject, on behalf of God, St. Paul states, "To the married, I give this command - not I but the Lord - that the wife should not separate from her husband (but if she does separate, let her remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife." [1 Cor. 7:10-1]

As heard, from the early days of the Church, it was not recommended that one should divorce and get remarried because this contradicted the Sacredness of the Sacrament of Marriage that God had instituted on earth.

Now, some take this command very lightly. Regarding this, Saint Paul says, "Now this I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer live as the Gentiles live, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart. They have lost all sensitivity and have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, greedy to practice every kind of impurity." [Eph. 4:17-9]

To divorce and remarry is to commit adultery! You may say, "What is the big deal about adultery. I know a lot of people who are doing it." What's the big deal? The big deal is that they who are living in adultery, none of them shall enter the Kingdom of God.

Who says so? St. Paul does! Listen to this passage from the Holy Bible. "Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God." [1 Cor. 6:9-10]

The same words are found in Galatians 5:19-21 where St. Paul says, I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do these things will not inherit the kingdom of God. In Hebrew 13:4, we read "Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers."

During today's Second Reading, we heard that the Lord Jesus was made lower than the angels so He may be crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. Christ died for us! He suffered for us! He did all this to bring us to glory, so we may obtain our salvation through Him.

In Christ, we are sanctified by the grace of the heavenly Father and the power of the Holy Spirit. Our sanctification unites us with our Sanctifier, the Lord Jesus. Our sanctification entitles us to be called brothers and sisters of Christ.

But this is only possible if we live by the Law, the Divine Law of love and holiness so the grace of God may continuously shine on us as we persevere in our pilgrimage on earth towards the eternal Kingdom that awaits those who will qualify to be adopted as the children of God.

My brothers and sisters, I expect that during the next few days, I will be hearing from some of you who will make an effort to prove to me that their marital separation or divorce was valid, their situation being an exceptional case. This is the common statement! I heard it before! All the other priests have heard it also! This is the common phrase that seeks to obtain mercy.

But the bottom line is that I, as a servant of God, am obligated, for the salvation of your soul, to tell you the truth, even if the truth hurts. The Lord God does not approve of divorces! He does not approve of common-law relationships! And He does not approve of adultery! If you value your salvation, then change from your worldly way and embrace the spiritual way, the righteousness of God. Move out of your relationship before it eternally destroys you!

I wash my hands! I have spoken the Word of God. Now, it is up to you, those who offend the Lord God, to do as your free will decides, for better or worse. May the grace of God be with all of you as you seek to live by His Divine Will.
