61:1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners;
61:2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
61:3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion-- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory.

GOSPEL:
John 1:6-8, 19-28

PERSONAL REFLECTION:
Each of us has favorite words from the bible which speak to our heart and give us solace in difficult times.
Last week we heard one of mine: “Comfort, O comfort, my people.” Every time, I hear this passage form
Isaiah 40:1, I am reminded of God’s love, not only for me, but for everybody. Just a few simple words, but in them I find the real essence of what God is all about, and I know that I am not alone. God is with me, andGod cares! What more could I want? How awful it would be, if I was all alone, and no one cared. Each of us, no matter how much we are loved by others, needs God’s love, and these word of caring and comfort from the one that created us really need to be heard, felt, and cherished.
In some ways this mortal life is a lonesome journey. We enter alone, and we exit alone, or so it seems to
those who have no faith. But, God wants us all to know that we are never alone, and that our heavenly
parent is always at our side. Let us hear those cherished words again, and ask God to etch them in our
heart: “Comfort, O comfort, my people.”
There is no better example of a person who knew the strength and the hope that comes from knowing
God’s loving care and presence, than Mary. How else could she have said: “My soul, magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Think about it for a minute. Mary knew God was with her. She
knew she was loved, and in this she found courage and safety. She could handle anything and everything
always in hope; never complaining, just pondering and trusting deep in her heart when things went wrong. Mary’s Spirit was able to rejoice in God, and God’s wants this same joy to be yours and mine so that we
too can say to ourselves, and all that we meet on life’s journey: “My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.”
This is St. Paul’s message to us this Third Sunday of Advent. “Brothers and Sisters,” he says, “rejoice
always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.” In truth, Paul knew that this was possible because God was with us.
Without God’s love and God’s presence in our lives this is only a futile wish. But with God at our side, and
in our heart, willing it for us, it can become our reality, our way, if we accept God’s love and comfort into our hearts.
In this weeks Gospel we hear of a man sent by God, named, John the Baptist. A man who testified about
the light “so that all might believe through him.” As we hear John testimony about the light, we are
reminded that God is with us - this is what the name Jesus means. As we celebrate Eucharist this third
advent Sunday, let us pray together for a deeper and more fervent faith experience in God’s presence and God’s love. And, let us pray that we will more fully appreciate God’s ultimate act of love for us - his birth,
death, and resurrection.
May our lives be a living proclamation to the world of God’s Love.
