First Reading                                 Ez 2:2-5
As the LORD spoke to me, the spirit entered into me
and set me on my feet,
and I heard the one who was speaking say to me:
Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites,
rebels who have rebelled against me;
they and their ancestors have revolted against me to this very day.
Hard of face and obstinate of heart
are they to whom I am sending you.
But you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD!
And whether they heed or resist--for they are a rebellious house--
they shall know that a prophet has been among them.
Responsorial Psalm                     Ps 123:1-2, 2, 3-4
R. (2cd) Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.
To you I lift up my eyes
who are enthroned in heaven --
As the eyes of servants
are on the hands of their masters.
R.
Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.
As the eyes of a maid
are on the hands of her mistress,
So are our eyes on the LORD, our God,
till he have pity on us.
R.
Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.
Have pity on us, O LORD, have pity on us,
for we are more than sated with contempt;
our souls are more than sated
with the mockery of the arrogant,
with the contempt of the proud.
R.
Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.

Second Reading                               2 Cor 12:7-10
Brothers and sisters:
That I, Paul, might not become too elated,
because of the abundance of the revelations,
a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan,
to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.
Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me,
but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you,
for power is made perfect in weakness."
I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses,
in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.
Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults,
hardships, persecutions, and constraints,
for the sake of Christ;
for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Gospel Acclamation:
1.     Pangitaa ang Gingharian
2.    Aleluya Lamdag Ka
3.    Alleluiah 17
4.    Aleluya Wikain mo (Francisco)
5.    Aleluya (Francisco)
6.    Sing Alleluia (Marcelo)
7.    Seek Ye First

Gospel                                  Mk 6:1-6
Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue,
and many who heard him were astonished.
They said, "Where did this man get all this?
What kind of wisdom has been given him?
What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,
and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon?
And are not his sisters here with us?"
And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them,
"A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
and among his own kin and in his own house."
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Homily/Reflection of the Readings:

My brothers and sisters, "grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to set us free from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father to whom be the glory forever and ever." [Gal. 1:3-5]

Today's three readings from the Holy Scriptures echo the Christian virtues of obedience, servitude and humility on the part of the Lord Jesus, the prophet Ezekiel and St. Paul. All three, subjected to a greater authority, submitted themselves to the Divine Will of the Lord God. [Lk. 9:1; 20:2-8]

During the First Reading from the Book of Ezekiel, [Eze. 2:2-5] we heard that the Spirit entered into Ezekiel, stood him on his feet and commissioned him to go to the people of Israel and to preach to them. During his commission, Ezekiel was warned that there was a possibility that the people would reject the message that he was delivering from God. But, whether they hear or refuse to hear, they shall know that there has been a prophet among them.

Humbly obeying, biblical history tells us that Ezekiel did serve the Lord God by going to the people, preached to them, and the Word of God was rejected by many.

When we consider the days of Ezekiel, they remind us of our own calling. As Catholics who have been baptized and confirmed, we who have received the seal of the Holy Spirit have been called to become slaves of the Lord Jesus, we have been sent forward to obey and serve in all humility. [Rom. 6:15-23](C.C.C. 1294-6) As Ezekiel was called to preach, whether they hear or not, we too have been sent to testify regarding the Word of God to our children, our spouse, our parents, our brothers and sisters, our relatives, our friends, our co-workers and all those with who we come in contact. Whether they hear or not is not important. What is important is that God is provided with the opportunity to manifest Himself through us so that when the day of judgment comes, those who appear before Him will not be able to say, "Lord, you never spoke to me!" [Mt. 25:34-46]

If we see someone sin and we remain silent to their sin, it means that we are giving our seal of approval to their sin. As such, we are just as guilty as the one who sins and we can be assured that the Lord God will remind us on judgment day that we have failed as true Catholics to obey His commandments and to serve Him in all humility.

My brothers and sisters, nothing comes free. There is a price for us to pay with the gift of the new creation that we received during the Sacrament of Baptism and the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we received during the Sacrament of Confirmation. While God is good and generous, giving to us freely, He expects us to give something to Him in return. Our gift to God is our Christian behaviour, our words and our actions, as true Catholics who shine in the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Those who walk by the Spirit of Christ are the children of God. [1 Jn. 5:2] Those who refuse to walk by the Spirit of Christ, they are not the children of God. [1 Jn. 3:10]

During today's Reading from the Second Letter to the Corinthians, we heard how serving God in obedience can get to our heads. As such, the sin of pride sets in.

As we mature in Christ, by the grace of God the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit, we gain greater understanding and knowledge of the spiritual mysteries of Christ and His mystical Body. During sanctification, the Holy Spirit is provided with the opportunity to move more freely through us. At this stage of spiritual growth, we no longer need milk, the basic teachings of christianity. [Heb. 5:11-3] Rather, we can now eat solid food, this meaning that we qualify to teach to others what we have learned. [Heb. 5:14]

While we qualify to teach, be it as a priest, a brother, a sister or a catechist, we are called to always remain humble in our obedience and servitude to the Lord Jesus. We are called to always remember that if our spiritual work shines in inspirations because we have the gift of teaching, it is because IT IS a gift of teaching. It is NOT because of anything that we can or have achieved on our own. All praise and glory should always be given to the Lord God for His spiritual work that is manifested through us as humble servants.

During the same reading, we heard that St. Paul had a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment him, to keep him from being too elated. We are not going to speculate as to what was the thorn because it is not revealed in the Holy Bible. The lesson that is important to learn from this is that sometimes the Lord will allow Satan to torment us with a human weakness in order to keep us humble. As long as we have a weakness, it will discourage us from judging others who have a weakness of their own. Our hearts will tell us that we too are weak in the human nature and we should refrain from judging others.

Therefore, it can be said that through a thorn in the flesh, a human weakness, the grace of God is at work and sufficient for us to remain humble in His eyes. Through that weakness, by remaining humble, one shines in Christlikeness. Is this not sufficient reason to be content with a human weakness just as one would be content with insults, hardships, persecution and calamities for the sake of Christ? St. Paul affirms that it is so!

During today's Reading from the Gospel of Mark, we heard how the Lord Jesus served God the Father in obedience and humility. Jesus came on earth to do the Divine Will of His Father and obeyed to the end. "He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross." [Phil. 2:8] He did not come as a King with a myriad of angels, but rather as a humble servant in human flesh. [Jn. 1:14; 1 Pet. 3:18]

Jesus went to His hometown and taught in the synagogues. As we heard, few believed in Him because they personally knew Him as the Son of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, and as the cousin of James, Joses, Judas and Simon. Because of their lack of faith, the grace of God could not manifest itself through Jesus. Very few were healed.

How often during His ministry did Jesus say, "If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." [Jn. 10:37-8]

Surely, the people from the hometown of Jesus had heard of the great miracles He was performing throughout the country. Surely, it must have been obvious that the grace of God was at work through Him. If only they would have believed that God the Father was manifesting Himself through Jesus, would that not have been sufficient faith for numerous cures? But no, the unbelief of the people was limited to their worldly perception of the human nature of Jesus. Refusing to believe in the Son of God, the grace of God did not manifest itself upon them through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Today, there are similar circumstances in many parishes throughout the world. When in need of a healing through the anointing of the holy oils, many Catholics search for a charismatic priest who is alleged to perform miracles. During this time, they have no faith in the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit that is manifested through their own local priest who has the authority from Jesus to administer the Sacrament of the Sick in the Church. Their vision is limited to the physical appearance of the priest, someone they know. As Jesus was rejected, today, many priests are rejected.

Has the world forgotten that when any priest administers the Holy Sacraments of the Catholic Church, he is the instrument of the Lord Jesus? While the priest is visible at the ceremony of Baptism, during the Consecration of the bread and wine or during the Sacrament of Confession, Jesus is also present, He being the One who is administering the Sacraments. As the Father manifested His power through Jesus during the healing of the sick, it is Jesus who is manifesting Himself through the priest of the Catholic Church during the anointing of the sick. If one has no faith in a priest for whatever reason, he should at least have faith in the power and glory of God that is manifested through the Sacraments. Would that not be sufficient faith to obtain the healing that they seek?

My brothers and sisters, as Jesus obeyed and served the Father in humility, the priests, the brothers, the sisters, all those who have consecrated their lives to God, are also called to obey and serve the Lord in humility. As the power of the Spirit of the Father was manifested through Jesus Christ, so it is in the Holy Catholic Church, be it through the priest who is administering the Sacraments, a Christian Brother who is teaching in a classroom or a religious sister who is administering a hospital.

Todays's readings call us to awaken our hearts so we may see the Divine truth beyond the human appearance of those we know. Obeying and serving the Lord as slaves indebted to Him for our salvation, we should humbly believe in the grace of God the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit that is manifested through our brothers and sisters in the Most Holy Name of Jesus. When we will have attained that elevation of spiritual knowledge and understanding, our faith will bring us to the realization that God is manifesting Himself all around us, in ways that we have never seen before.

My brothers and sisters, may the abounding grace and peace of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you this week as you reflect on the spiritual wealth that is found in today's readings.

First Reading                                          Wis 1:13-15; 2:23-24
God did not make death,
nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living.
For he fashioned all things that they might have being;
and the creatures of the world are wholesome,
and there is not a destructive drug among them
nor any domain of the netherworld on earth,
for justice is undying.
For God formed man to be imperishable;
the image of his own nature he made him.
But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world,
and they who belong to his company experience it.
Responsorial Psalm                                     Ps 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11, 12, 13
R. (2a) I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
I will extol you, O LORD, for you drew me clear
and did not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O LORD, you brought me up from the netherworld;
you preserved me from among those going down into the pit.
R.
I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
Sing praise to the LORD, you his faithful ones,
and give thanks to his holy name.
For his anger lasts but a moment;
a lifetime, his good will.
At nightfall, weeping enters in,
but with the dawn, rejoicing.
R.
I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me;
O LORD, be my helper.
You changed my mourning into dancing;
O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks.
R.
I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
Second Reading                                        2 Cor 8:7, 9, 13-15
Brothers and sisters:
As you excel in every respect, in faith, discourse,
knowledge, all earnestness, and in the love we have for you,
may you excel in this gracious act also.

For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor,
so that by his poverty you might become rich.
Not that others should have relief while you are burdened,
but that as a matter of equality
your abundance at the present time should supply their needs,
so that their abundance may also supply your needs,
that there may be equality.
As it is written:
Whoever had much did not have more,
and whoever had little did not have less.

Gospel Acclamation:

Gospel                                         Mk 5:21-43
When Jesus had crossed again in the boat
to the other side,
a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea.
One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward.
Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying,
"My daughter is at the point of death.
Please, come lay your hands on her
that she may get well and live."
He went off with him,
and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him.

There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years.
She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors
and had spent all that she had.
Yet she was not helped but only grew worse.
She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd
and touched his cloak.
She said, "If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured."
Immediately her flow of blood dried up.
She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him,
turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who has touched my clothes?"
But his disciples said to Jesus,
"You see how the crowd is pressing upon you,
and yet you ask, 'Who touched me?'"
And he looked around to see who had done it.
The woman, realizing what had happened to her,
approached in fear and trembling.
She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth.
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you.
Go in peace and be cured of your affliction."

While he was still speaking,
people from the synagogue official's house arrived and said,
"Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?"
Disregarding the message that was reported,
Jesus said to the synagogue official,
"Do not be afraid; just have faith."
He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside
except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official,
he caught sight of a commotion,
people weeping and wailing loudly.
So he went in and said to them,
"Why this commotion and weeping?
The child is not dead but asleep."
And they ridiculed him.
Then he put them all out.
He took along the child's father and mother
and those who were with him
and entered the room where the child was.
He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum,"
which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!"
The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around.
At that they were utterly astounded.
He gave strict orders that no one should know this
and said that she should be given something to eat.

Personal Interpretation/Reflections of the Readings: (Sariling pag-unawa ko lang po ito. Minsan may mga kaibigan akong Pari na nagbibigay ng Homily nila at nilalagay ko iyon dito.)

Good morning my brothers and sisters in Christ. I have a question for you today. How many of you have eternal life? Raise your hand those of you who believe or know that you have eternal life.

(You may wish to add your personal comment at the comment box below…)

Eternal life, what is it? Some have it and do not know that they have it. Some do not have it, are searching for it, but they are rejecting the means of getting it. Blessed are those who have it and who know that they have it!

Regarding eternal life, the Holy Bible states,
"And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." [Jn.17:3]
To know God is to have a daily personal relationship with Him. Therefore, to have eternal life means to know God as He know Himself in order to be able to eternally enjoy a personal relationship with Him in His heavenly Kingdom.

Today's readings from the Holy Scriptures speak of the gift of eternal life. The First Reading from the Book of Wisdom tells us, "God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. For he created all things so that they might exist; the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them, and the dominion of Hades is not on earth. For righteousness is immortal." [Wis. 1:13-5]

When the Lord God created the light, the dry land, the herbs and trees, the sun and the moon, the water creatures, the winged fowl, the beasts, all what creeps on the earth and man, 'it was good.' [Gen. 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31] Seven times, the words "It was good" are repeated in the First Chapter of the Book of Genesis.

Contrary to what some say, that hell is here on earth, the Holy Bible teaches us that hell is not here on earth. [Wis. 1:14] If some think that hell is here, it is because they are creating their own hell.

For those of us who live a righteous life, we have a different perception of the world. We live for the blessed hope of the life to come, the eternal life in the Kingdom of God. While we are physically present on earth, we are not of this world. Our hearts are set on Jesus, our living hope of the salvation that has been promised to those who live a life of righteousness through their living faith in Christ.

Thanks to the living sacrifice of Jesus, we have the assurance of eternal life in the Kingdom of God. The accuser of our brothers and sisters in Christ has been thrown down from Heaven, he who accuses them day and night before our God. [Rev. 12:9] "For to know (Jesus) is complete righteousness, and to know (His) power is the root of immortality." [Wis. 15:3]

God created us for incorruption and made us in His own image [Gen. 1:27; Wis. 2:23] so we may inherit His Kingdom. If the wicked inherit spiritual death, it is because they invite it upon themselves.

But man can avoid spiritual death, he being called to inherit the Kingdom of God. To do so, he has to acquire life in Christ or risk losing it for failing to reach out for God's grace. Acquiring life in Christ by the grace of God is achieved through faith in Christ and the Sacrament of Baptism when the new convert receives the promised gifts of God, the indwelling Holy Spirit, a new heart and spirit of the godly seed. [1 Jn. 3:9]

"Through the devil's envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his company experience it." [Wis. 2:24] As Jesus said to those who had an evil heart, "You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies." [Jn. 8:44]

"No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other..." [Mt. 6:24] To have life, one must be a slave of the Lord Jesus, the eternal King of kings. To have death, one must be a slave of the prince of this world, the prince of darkness and deception.

To have eternal life in the Kingdom of God and serve the Lord Jesus, we must excel in everything, in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness and in our love towards one another. We know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor, so that by His poverty we might become rich. [2 Cor. 8:7, 9]

"Though (Jesus) was in the form of God, He did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross." [Phil. 2:6-8]

For our salvation, Jesus set aside His power so He could relate to mankind at the level of man. He did not come into this world as a glorious King surrounded by a myriad of angels. He came as a helpless infant, trusted in the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, in poverty, homeless, in need of tender loving care as every child that is born of the human nature. Nor did He leave this world in the full glory that He truly deserved. Instead, He was treated as a common criminal, condemned to death and crucified for having revealed the truth, that He was the Son of God. Through His death as the sacrificial Lamb of God, Jesus having taken the sins of the world upon His shoulders, we found life.

Jesus died for us so that we may share our Christian love with one another. As He gave of Himself, He asked us to give of ourselves. He asked those who have an abundance to share their wealth with those in need so that those who have little, do not have too little. With that little extra that they receive through the love of their Christian brothers and sisters, they too can live a decent life above the poverty level.

As today's Gospel Reading tells us, Jesus shared generously. Reaching out to the synagogue leader who had faith in Him, Jesus raised his twelve year old daughter. As He had done with Lazarus, Jesus gave life to the little girl that had crossed over to death. Surely, if Jesus can raise the dead from the point of no return, the power is His to raise all the living dead and to grant eternal life in the Kingdom of God to those to who He chooses to do so.

In today's Gospel Reading, we also heard how a woman was healed of twelve years of hemorrhages, simply by touching the clothes of the Lord Jesus. What faith she must have had! And her faith made her well, she being healed of her disease. The Gospel of Mark tells us that she suffered for twelve years before turning to Jesus. She had endured much under many physicians and obviously drained her of all her financial resources. Jesus was her last hope... her only hope. Nothing in the physical world could heal her... it took a miracle... a miracle of God. And the Son of God was there for her when she needed Him the most, after much suffering.

How much more are we willing to suffer before we turn to God? How much are we willing to suffer before we place our complete faith in Jesus? Having received the promise of eternal life in the Kingdom of God through the Sacrament of Baptism, are we now walking our living faith in Christ so we may qualify to inherit our salvation? Are we receiving the Sacrament of Confession on a regular basis so we may maintain our righteousness in the eyes of God? Are we receiving the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the Living Bread, so we may have the life of Christ in us?

Eternal life in the Kingdom of God is to be acquired by the grace of God through our good works by the power of the Holy Spirit in the Most Holy Name of Jesus. If we say that we have faith in Christ and we do not shine in good works, we are dead. [Jas. 2:26] Our gift of eternal life in the Kingdom of God is rooted in Jesus Christ. Through Christ, we shall inherit the Kingdom of God as worthy children of the Lord Almighty.
