First Reading...
"Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!"' says the Lord. "Therefore," thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them."

"So I will attend to you for your evil doings," says the Lord. "Then, I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and mulstiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing," says the Lord.

"The days are surely coming," says the Lord, "when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The Lord is our righteousness." [Jer. 23:1-6]

Responsorial Psalm       Ps 23
Response        The Lord is my shepherd;
                       there is nothing I shall want.
1. The Lord is my shepherd;
    there is nothing I shall want.
    Fresh and green are the pastures
    where he gives me repose.
    Near restful waters he leads me,
    to revive my drooping spirit.
2. He guides me along the right path;
    he is true to his name.
    If I should walk in the valley of darkness
    no evil would I fear.
    You are there with your crook and your staff;
    with these you give me comfort.
3. You have prepared a banquet for me
    in the sight of my foes.
    My head you have anointed with oil;
    my cup is overflowing.
4. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
    all the days of my life.
    In the Lord's own house shall I dwell
    forever and ever.

Second Reading...
"Brothers and sisers: Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both Jews and Gentiles into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.

He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the Cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it.

So Christ Jesus came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father." [Eph. 2:13-8]

Gospel Acclamation:
1.     Aleluya sa ‘tong Ginoo (Fernandez)
2.     Aleluya (Francisco)
3.     Celtic Alleluia (O’Caroll – Walker)

Gospel Reading...
"The apostles returned from their mission. They gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught.

He said to them, 'Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things." [Mk. 6:30-4]

Reflection/Homily of the Readings (July 22)

Greetings my brothers and sisters in the Name of our Lord Jesus. As many of you must recall, year 2000 was set aside to commemorate the Most Holy Trinity. During that year, we strived to perceive the united but distinctive roles of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in all things. Today's readings serve as a reminder of our spiritual efforts three years ago. They echo the united but distinctive roles of the three Divine Presences of the Holy Trinity.

In the days of the prophet Jeremiah, disappointed with the priestly branch of the Levites who were called to be good shepherds, God the Father promised, "I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold." [Jer. 23:3] And as our living faith teaches us, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the good Shepherd, our Lord Jesus Christ, came and laid down His life for the sheep. [Jn. 10:11]

Why did Jesus lay down His life? He laid down His life to reclaim His Kingdom that Satan had captured [Rev. 12:10-1] through the sinful disobedience of our first parents in the Garden of Eden. He laid down His life as an act of Divine love and mercy to reunite as one the children of God who obey His word. [1 Jn. 2:5] He laid down His life so we may become one as the Father and the Son are one. [Jn. 11:17]

During today's First Reading, we heard the promise of God the Father to gather the remnant of His flock out of all the lands and to raise shepherds over them to shepherd them. Through the ministry of the common priesthood in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, we have seen the fulfillment of this Divine prophecy.

Our loving and merciful heavenly Father also promised that through the genealogy of king David, He would raise a righteous Branch, He who would reign as King and deal wisely, and he would execute justice and righteousness in the land. Through Him who will be called our righteousness, the people from every nation would qualify to be saved. This has been fulfilled through the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the righteous One, [1 Jn. 2:1] He through who we receive our righteousness. [Rom. 4:25]

Once, before our Baptism, we were far off. Born in sin, we were called to experience physical and spiritual death. Now, through our Lord Jesus Christ, we have been brought near. Through faith in Jesus and the Sacrament of Baptism, we have received the living hope of our salvation. For Jesus is the promise of our blessed hope... eternal joy and peace. Through the spiritual Kingdom that He has instituted on earth, Jesus has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between nations, races and cultures. For the wisdom of God from above is without partiality. [Jas. 3:17] Christ came to proclaim peace to all. Through Him, all of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.

To reconcile all to God in one body through the cross, our Lord Jesus removed the obstacle that created hostilities by abolishing the law with all its commandments and ordinances. There no longer is a need for animal sacrifices to atone for sins. For we were justified through Jesus, [Rom. 5:9] the perfect sacrifice, He atoning once for the sins of all. [Rom. 4:24; 2 Cor. 5:21]

During today's Gospel Reading, [Mk. 6:30-34] we heard that the apostles of Jesus had returned from their mission. They gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. Here, we see accountability, where the apostles account to Jesus who is the head of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that He has instituted on earth.

When I reflect upon this, I think of Pope John-Paul II who completed this year his 100 th worldwide trip and all the bishops from throughout the world who also travel tremendously in order to reach their flocks. As the apostles were accountable to Jesus, all the bishops of the world come and go on a regular basis, accounting to the Pontiff on all matters related to the christian faith in their dioceses.

When I heard during today's reading that the apostles had no leisure time, not even a moment to eat because many were coming and going, I said to myself, 'Things have not changed!' Even today, the agenda of the Pope and the bishops is very demanding. With all their travelling, political meetings, the celebration of the Holy Mass, the visiting the faithful, the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, I wonder where they get their time to write their sermons, never mind the time to eat.

Being human like everyone else, they also need time to themselves. During today's Gospel reading, we heard how Jesus and the apostles tried to sneak away to a deserted place to have time by themselves. As you all heard, being popular as they were, they never escaped the crowd. People came from all over. Being filled with compassion for them who were like sheep without a Shepherd, Jesus began to teach them many things. What love He had for the people!

Even today, we see the love of Jesus for the people in the words and actions of Pope John-Paul II. In the spirit of ecumenimsm, He goes out of his way to united all faith as one in Christ. It is very commendable. Truly, our Pontiff, the representative of Christ on earth, the visible head of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, continues in the footsteps of Jesus.

My brothers and sisters, as a spiritual tool to strengthen your knowledge of the Catholic faith, I would like to take a few moments to point out a few Bible passages that affirm that Christ appointed St. Peter the apostle and his successors after him as the head of the Catholic Church.

First of all, Jesus gave the apostle the name 'Peter' which means 'rock.' Jesus also declared, that upon him as the 'rock,' He would build His Church. [Mt. 16:18]

Second, Jesus gave to Peter something that He did not give to the other apostles. He gave him the "keys to the kingdom of heaven.' [Mt. 16:19] The power of the key is the symbol of supreme power and authority according to the prophet Isaiah. "I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and no one shall shut; he shall shut, and no one shall open." [Is. 22:22] On this subject, the Book of Revelation states, "These are the words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens." [Rev. 3:7] Combining these passages, it is obvious that Jesus is the holy one who received the key of David to the eternal kingdom and that He intended on giving them to Peter and his successors.

Third, after His resurrection, Jesus formally commissioned Peter to feed His whole flock when He said, "Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep." [Jn. 21:15-7] Earlier, Jesus had said, "So there will be one flock, one shepherd." [Jn. 10:16] Through these words, Jesus appointed and intended Peter to be the one and only chief pastor of his one fold.

Fourth, when Satan demanded to sift the apostles like wheat, Jesus prayed for Peter so his faith may not fail; and he, Peter, once he has turned back, may strengthen his brothers. [Lk. 22:31-2] The prayer of Jesus was specifically for Peter, that his faith should not fail so he may strengthen his brothers.

Fifth, when reviewing the lists of apostles given in the Gospels, the name of Peter is always first. The names of the others vary in order, depending on what list you read. At the same time, Peter was not the first apostle to answer his call because his brother Andrew was called before him. Peter was listed first by the writers of the Gospels because he was recognized as the supreme authority of the Church.

Sixth, in the list of the apostles in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Simon is referred to as 'Peter' which means 'rock,' the name that Jesus gave him.

Seventh, the final authority of St. Peter as the head of the Church is seen in the replacement of Judas [Acts 1] and at the Council at Jerusalem. [Acts 15:7]

Eight, since the early days of christianity, the writers and holy fathers of every age always affirmed it as a truth revealed by God that Jesus appointed St. Peter as the prince of the apostles and the visible head of His Church.

Ninth, without any doubt, all the successors of St. Peter, beginning with the first one after him, have claimed the supreme authority as the head of the Church that was instituted by Christ on earth. As such, they have all exercised their authority throughout the history of the Church since its beginning.

These truths that have guided the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church throughout its history affirm that by our obedience and submission to the head of the Church, we are called to be united as one in Christ. Our loyalty to Pope John-Paul II echoes our loyalty to Jesus Christ. Our disobedience to the teachings of Pope John-Paul II echoes our disobedience to Jesus Christ. No one can serve two masters. He will love one and hate the other. [Mt. 6:24]

My brothers and sisters in Christ, this week, as we reflect on today's message from the Word of God, let us ask ourselves if we are loyal to the head of the Catholic Church. Are our thoughts, words and actions in harmony with the call of Christ for us to be one as Jesus and the Father are one? If some of us fall short of that call, let us repent of our human failure and embrace a spiritual mind so we may shine as a light in the world as we are meant to shine.

May the grace and love of Jesus be with each and everyone of you this week.

First Reading                                  Am 7:12-15
Amaziah, priest of Bethel, said to Amos,
"Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah!
There earn your bread by prophesying,
but never again prophesy in Bethel;
for it is the king's sanctuary and a royal temple."
Amos answered Amaziah, "I was no prophet,
nor have I belonged to a company of prophets;
I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores.
The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me,
Go, prophesy to my people Israel."
Responsorial Psalm                             Ps 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14
R. (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
I will hear what God proclaims;
the LORD --for he proclaims peace.
Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,
glory dwelling in our land.
R.
Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
Kindness and truth shall meet;
justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.
R.
Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
The LORD himself will give his benefits;
our land shall yield its increase.
Justice shall walk before him,
and prepare the way of his steps.
R.
Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
Second Reading                                Eph 1:3-14
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,
as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and without blemish before him.
In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ,
in accord with the favor of his will,
for the praise of the glory of his grace
that he granted us in the beloved.
In him we have redemption by his blood,
the forgiveness of transgressions,
in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us.
In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us
the mystery of his will in accord with his favor
that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times,
to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.

In him we were also chosen,
destined in accord with the purpose of the One
who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,
so that we might exist for the praise of his glory,
we who first hoped in Christ.
In him you also, who have heard the word of truth,
the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him,
were sealed with the promised holy Spirit,
which is the first installment of our inheritance
toward redemption as God's possession, to the praise of his glory.
Or Eph 1:3-10
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,
as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and without blemish before him.
In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ,
in accord with the favor of his will,
for the praise of the glory of God's grace
that he granted us in the beloved.

3.     Celtic Alleluia (O’Caroll – Walker)
Gospel                                         Mk 6:7-13
Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two
and gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey
but a walking stick--
no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
They were, however, to wear sandals
but not a second tunic.
He said to them,
"Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them."
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Homily/Reading Reflections

My brothers and sisters in Christ, welcome to today's celebration of the Holy Mass, the visible reflection of the invisible banquet to which we will participate in the Divine presence of our Lord Jesus through the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Today's readings from the Holy Gospel echo that we have all been called by the Lord, destined for adoption to become children of God.

Originally, when preparing my reflection or reading interpretation, I had planned on asking two questions. The first question was, how many of you have been called by the Lord Jesus? The second one was, how many of you have answered your calling?

The reason that I decided not to ask these questions is because I thought some of you might associate the word "calling" with a religious vocation. That would have implied that those who are not called to the religious life have not been called by God. But this is not the case! We are all called by the grace of God, each according to our commission. Yes, it is true that some are called to the religious life. But others are called to the married life. And others yet are called to remain single. In each of these different callings, we are called to the same spiritual vocation, to worship God in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship Him. [Jn. 4:23]

Each has a calling according to the Divine Will of God. Each and everyone of us have been commissioned through Jesus Christ to lead a life worthy of adoption to become children of God.

During today's First Reading from the Book of Amos that is found in the Old Testament, we heard that the Lord told Amos, "Go, prophesy to my people Israel." As you heard from this reading and previous biblical readings, in those days, "in many and various ways God spoke of old to our father by the prophets." (C.C.C. # 65) Each prophet received a distinct commission according to his calling.

"But in these days," it is different! "God has spoken to us through His Son Jesus Christ, God made man." (C.C.C. # 65) As such, "no new public revelation is to be expected before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ." (C.C.C. # 66) All what God the Father had to say to us was said through Jesus Christ. We do not have to wait days, months or years for God to appear to each and everyone of us.

By the grace of God the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit, through our faith in Jesus Christ and the Sacrament of Baptism, we have been called to become children of God. Through the Sacrament of Confirmation, we have been equipped with spiritual "gifts of the Holy Spirit according to the grace that has been given to us." [Rom. 12:6] and sent forth by our Bishop as shining lights in the world [Mt. 5:16] "to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross." (C.C.C. # 1303)

Our personal calling does not demand us to push ourselves upon others. Certainly not! We are called to be disposed in Christian love to share the Word of God with those who are open to Divine grace. After all, everyone has a free will to accept or to reject the gospel of their salvation. As we heard from the First Reading, the Word of God through Amos was not welcomed. Amos was told to go somewhere else to prophesy.

During today's Gospel, we heard Jesus say, "If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them." Note what Jesus said. He did not say that we should persecute those who reject His Word. He said to shake the dust off our feet. Amen. That is it!

Having been sent by the apostolic Church to spread and defend the faith before our family, our friends and our co-workers, we can expect that our christian obligation will not be easy. Some will reject us because we represent Jesus on earth. But we should not feel so bad about it because we are in good company. We will be counted among those who have been rejected, our Lord Jesus, St. Paul, St. Stephen and all the martyrs of the Holy Catholic Church. We will be counted among our brothers and sisters in Christ who today are sharing the same hardship in the hope of the glory to come.

When our efforts to spread and defend the faith to the people are rejected, we should always remember the Words of the Lord to Moses, "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being King over them." [1 Sam. 8:7]

Today's Second Reading from the Letters to the Ephesians teaches us that we were chosen by God before creation. God did not choose us when we committed ourselves at our Baptism. Nor when we were confirmed, attended to our first confession, or when we received our First Communion. He chose each and everyone of us to be saved through the Blood of Christ before creation! Stop and think about that! [Pause]

Having destined us for adoption as His children through Jesus Christ, the Heavenly Father chose each and everyone of us to be holy and blameless before Him in love. And all of this is freely given [Rom. 5:15] to us to manifest the praise of His glorious grace.

In His Divine wisdom and insight, God determined that when the fullness of time would come, He would make known to us the mystery of His Will that He set forth through Christ, in Heaven and on earth. The grace of God was not only limited to Heaven or to the earth, but to both. Through Christ, "being born in human likeness, being found in human form [Col. 2:7] on earth, the Holy Catholic and apostolic Church was instituted to reveal the holy Sacraments that lead to salvation and eternal life in Heaven. Through Christ in Heaven, the "firstfruit" [Rom. 8:23, 11:16; 1 Cor. 15:20] of many to follow, the Kingdom of God was eternally instituted. And the Kingdom of God is not limited to Heaven; it is here on earth today for us to enter its doors through the Sacrament of Baptism.

That is our inheritance that comes through Christ, through who we were destined according to the Will of God to be called the children of God. Our hope is in Christ so we may live for the praise of His glory.

My brothers and sisters, when we first heard the "word of truth," [Jas. 1:18] the gospel of our salvation and we believed in Jesus, we were marked by the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. At that moment was fulfilled in each and everyone of us the promises of God that are found in the Old Testament, that He would give us a new heart and spirit. [Ezek. 11:19-20; 18:31] Not only did God promise to give each and everyone of us those gifts before we were born, but He also promised to place His Holy Spirit within each and everyone of us to help us remain good by obeying His Holy ways. [Ezek. 36:26-7] Blessed be our God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. [Ephes. 1:3]

So powerful is the Word of God that "indeed, it is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit..." [Heb. 4:12] When the grace of God touched each and everyone of us, we were drawn to Him. To transform us as new creations that are holy and blameless before Him, our loving God gives us a new heart during the Sacrament of Baptism. At that moment, through the Word of God that was spoken, our old nature died because it had inherited the sin of Adam. At that moment, "we died," [Rom. 6:5] "were buried" [Rom. 6:4] in water and raised with Christ as new creations in fulfillment of the promise of God the Father. [Ezek. 11:19-20; 18:31]

Listen to the final words that were read in today's Second Reading. "This is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, in the praise of His glory." [Ephes. 1:14] What I have just finished explaining to you was fulfilled through each and everyone of us during the Sacrament of Baptism. At that moment, we were made righteous in the eyes of God through our new creation that was given to us as a gift of Divine love. Just as Adam and Eve enjoyed the beatific vision of God in the Garden of Eden, we have received the promise of an equal blessing, the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we received a second chance!

Now that we have been made righteous by the grace of God, a gift freely given to us by His infinite grace, we have to maintain our righteousness through our living faith in Christ. When we sin, we have to make use of the Catholic Church Sacrament of Confession that reinstates our righteousness before God. Having been made righteous again, we have to partake in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the Living Bread that seals our salvation.

How do we live our faith in Christ? By partaking in the Sacraments and by answering the Lord's call to go forth to spread and defend the faith by announcing the good news that the promises of the Old Testament are being fulfilled through the Sacraments of the Holy Catholic Church. Salvation and eternal life in the Kingdom of God is within the reach of all those who will fix their eyes on our Lord Jesus Christ who is in the glory of God, the fullness of the Holy Trinity dwelling bodily. [Col 1:19, 2:9]

My brothers and sisters, we all have a calling to answer. As a priest, I am called to administer the Church Sacraments, to preach the Word, to perform exorcisms, to anoint the sick with holy oils and all what my ministry requires of me as a servant of the Lord.

Those of you who have been called to the religious life as a brother or a sister, your calling is different. And so it is different for those who have been called to the Sacrament of Marriage and those who have been called to remain single. While our callings differ greatly in the visible world, the spiritual calling that we must answer in the invisible world is identical to all of us. As St. Paul states at the beginning of the Letter to the Romans, it is through our human spirit that we serve God by announcing the gospel of His Son. [Rom. 1:9]

We have all received a new heart and spirit, over and above the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, so we may be enslaved to Jesus Christ in obedience, servitude and humility. Through our new creation, we are destined for adoption as children of God. But such is not fulfilled until we have persevered in our living faith until our LAST BREATH.

My brothers and sisters, let us reflect upon these words this week. Let us reflect on how awesome it is that God destined us to saved before we were born. Let us reflect on the fact that God made promises to us thousands of years ago and He is fulfilling those promises through the Sacraments of the Holy Catholic Church. Let us reflect on the fact that God had each and everyone of us on His mind, knowing in advance that He would be giving us the gifts of our inheritance to come for the glory of Jesus Christ. We are destined for adoption as children of God!
