Song Suggestions for Dec 16 PM & Dec 17 AM (Day 2 of Simbang Gabi)

SONG LINE UP SUGGESTIONS
Dec 16 PM & Dec 17 AM (Day 2 of Simbang Gabi)
By: JR Medina and Brian Gangca

Readings:
1R: In Genesis, the patriarch Jacob prophesies that the descendants of one of his twelve sons, Judah, shall constitute the royal and lion-like (king of beasts) race. (Note that Judah indeed would be one of the human ancestors of Jesus.)

RP: 72 “Justice shall flourish in His time, and fullness of peace forever” or 71 “Mabubuhay s’yang marangal at sasagana kailanman.”

G: The Gospel presents the ancestors of Jesus. (Some of them are virtuous; others, vicious. Although some of them were sinful, the Son of God Himself descends from them. God thus finds a way, and fulfills His promise (and Jacob's prophesy) in 1R.

Important Ideas:
Plurality of Salvation, the plan of salvation is of old, kin, God’s wonderful might, i.e., victory over sin, God fulfills His promises

Cebuano:

Entrance:
  1. Umanhi Ka, Ayaw Paglangan
  2. Adlaw’g Gabii

Offertory:
  1. Dawata Kining Kamot Ko
  2. Gasa Namo Kanimo

Communion:
  1. Sa Atong Pagpuyo ( F7)
  2. Umanhi Ka Mesiyas

Recessional:
  1. Andama ang Dalan
  2. Tan-awa ang Imong Katawhan
  3. Umanhi Ka Mesiyas (if not used in Communion)

Tagalog:

E: Friendly Options:

1. Halina, Hesus (Javellana & Hontiveros) “Sa simula isinaloob Mo, O Diyos, kaligtasan ng tao.”
2. Bayan Magsiawit na! (Arnel Aquino SJ) (“...Bagyan, pinagpala ka! Dakilang biyayang pangako Niya, sisilay na!”...) rather than sumilay na.
3. Bayan, umawit (Borres, Baltazar, Francisco). “sapagkat ngayon kayo’y pinili” rather than ika’y pinili. Doing so produces a line more faithful to and reminiscent of the plenty characters in both 1R and G. "Ika'y pinili" though, could be used, if you want to emphasize 1R only. In that case, only Judah, not necessarily his race, might be recalled to mind.
4. Ang Puso ko'y nagpupuri. (Hontiveros) Prioritize Stanza 3: "At sa lahat ng salinlahi ang awa N'ya'y walang hanggan" is a good teaser to JC's ancestral lineage.
5. Pagmamahal sa Panginoon (Hontiveros) "ating...tanang mga tao...atin")

Mayroong Papuri. Mayroong Aleluya.

P of the G:

1. Pag-aalay (Manoling Francisco, SJ). From Stanza 1, go straight to Stanza 3. “Lahat ng aming mahal sa buhay...” This calls to mind family and kin.
2. Unang Alay (Rey Magnaye): Suggest ko sing instead, “Ngayo’y umaasa, naghihintay sa ‘Yo.” Now if your choir sings the Koda, you deliver one solid message if you sing: “Ngayo’y nananalig (umaawit), dumudulog (sumasamba), umaasa (naghihintay) sa ‘Yo.”

C: Choose among:

1. Panginoon masdan Mo (Danny Isidro SJ/Nemy Que SJ)
2. Pag-ibig Ko (Cenzon) Very applicable to the sinful condition of some of Jesus’ ancestors. (Despite such a condition, the Son of God comes from them.) “Ako’y kapiling mo kahit ikaw pa ma’y mapalayo.”
But u know what, let’s make this song more apt:
Stanza 1: Hindi n’yo kailangang magbago, kahit ito’y mas ibig Ko. Hindi n'yo kailangang magsikap nang husto, upang kayo’y ibigin Ko.
Koro: Iniibig kayo, manalig na sana; Ako’y kapiling n’yo, kahit kayo pa ma’y mapalayo.
Stanza 2, in my opinion, is better left unsung on this occasion, dahel mas akma siya kapag kumpisalang bayan. Cguro just repeat Stanza 1.
3. Panginoon hanggang kailan? (Danny Isidro SJ/Fruto Ramirez SJ)
4. Sino kayo (Javellana-Que) "Sino kayong napabilang sa Kanyang kapisanan" could be interpreted as Jesus’ kin.
5. Likhain Mong Muli (Albert Alejo SJ & Manoling Francisco SJ) "Ilikha Mo kami ng 'sang bagong puso, hugasan ang kamay na basa sa dugo" could very likely be the prayer of Jesus' ancestors.

R:
1. Kung hindi gagamiten ang E1 and E2 as entrance songs, either can very well serve as appropriate recessional songs.
2. O Bayan ng Diyos (Arnel Aquino SJ) is the perfect recessional song for this occasion.

English:

E: Friendly Options:

1. Come with praise: yung kay Tito Dan (Schutte)
2. Lover of us all (Dan Schutte)
3. Save us, O Lord: yung kay Tito Bob D
Tip: look for songs na pang-maramihan: we, us, kami, tayo. Try to avoid songs na singular: ako, I, me, myself.

Gloria is sung. Alleluia is sung.

P of the G:

1. Earthen Vessels (John Foley SJ)
2. Prayer of Rupert Mayer (Manoling Francisco’s)
3. Take our Bread (Joseph Wise)
4. To be Your Bread (kay Tito David H) Stanza 1’s “with our lives as they are” is sobrang swak sa G.

C: Pwedeng pagpilian:

1. Love is the Answer (Raymond Hannisian). Prioritize Stanza 2.
Kasi kung stanza 1 ang kakantahen, I’d advise mas bagay yung song kung yung mga “I” ay gagawing “we”, tsaka yung “my” to “our”.
Pero yung stanza 2, onti lang ang babaguhen, okay na okay na: Though we came by diff’rent roads, now we walk together. Stay beside us all our days, strangers never more. Through the cool of summer rains, by the hearthside fire, I’ll be with you when nothing remains, I am home to stay.
2. My fave advent song The Face of God (Manoling Francisco SJ)
3. So the Love of God (Dan Schutte)
4. Without seeing You. This is a song not only of Doubting Thomas. This could very well be the song of Jesus’ ancestors.
5. You are mine. This could very well be God’s song for Jesus’ ancestors.

R:
1. The King of Glory (WF Jabusch) Stanza 1’s “the Promised of ages” is an implied reminder to the 14 x 3 (do the math ha) generations. So is the King of Glory (Judah's tribe is acknowledged as the royal tribe).
2. Wait for the Lord (Taize)

Song Suggestions for Dec 15 PM & Dec 16 AM (Day 1 of Simbang Gabi)

SONG LINE UP SUGGESTIONS
Dec 15 PM & Dec 16 AM (Day 1 of Simbang Gabi)
By: JR Medina and Brian Gangca

Readings:
1R: Isaiah advises us to act justly, for God’s salvation would soon be seen. Blessed is the person who keeps holy the Day of the Lord and stays away from evil. The Gentiles must not lose hope, for God warmly welcomes them, and actually wants more of them to come.

RP: 66 “Nawa’y magpuri sa Iyo ang lahat ng mga tao.” Please note that the most important word here is surprisingly, “lahat.”

G: John the Evangelist writes that John the Baptist’s witness i.e., words/talk/prophesies cannot be underestimated. But the witness of Jesus is not just talk/words, not just action/walk, i.e., He will actually suffer and die. Not that proof is needed, but this is a sign that indeed the Father sent Jesus for a divine mission.

Important Ideas:
1. The Universality of Salvation,
2. a. Gentiles’ efforts to be saved will not be ignored by God: very parallel to John the Evangelist’s efforts for people’s salvation:
b. God appreciates them, ie., all efforts to work for the kingdom.
3. The Coming One’s love for us—that He laid down His life for us—is a sign that He indeed is the One we humans have waited for millennia, the One who was prophesied by the prophets. His very suffering and death shall testify to that.

Entrance:

  1. Pagmata Na
  2. Pagpangatagak na Yamog
  3. Simbang Gabi (Lucio San Pedro)
  4. Bayan Magsiawit na! (Arnel Aquino SJ) (“...Bagyan, pinagpala ka! Dakilang biyayang pangako Niya, sisilay na!”...) rather than sumilay na.
  5. Isang Pananampalataya (Avelino Santos & Eddie Hontiveros SJ) (“Angkinin nating lahat”)
  6. Magpuri sa Panginoon (Eddie Hontiveros) (“...lahat ng santinakpan...”)
  7. Sa Hapag ng Panginoon (Lui Morano & Manoling Francisco SJ) (“...buong bayan...”) basta song that welcomes and includes everyone. Look for songs with the words lahat, santinakpan, etc.
  8. All the Ends of the earth (Bob Dufford SJ),
  9. Let Heaven Rejoice (Bob Dufford SJ)
  10. Lover of us all (Dan Schutte)
  11. Meadows and Mountains (Dan Schutte)
  12. Praise God, (Bob Dufford SJ/John Foley SJ) Prioritize Stanza 2: “The heavens declare it: the glory of God upon the earth, to people of ev’ry race and nation.”)
  13. Sing to the Mountains (Bob Dufford)
  14. Sing O Sing (Dan Schutte)
(Basta song na nagsasabi na ang lahat ay kikilos for the kingdom “all the earth, community-hood, universality etc.”)

MAYROONG PAPURI/GLORIA. MAYROONG ALELUYA.

Offertory:

  1. Gasa sa Gugma (Koro Viannista) good choice
  2. Daygon Ikaw, Ginoong Dios
  3. Gasa Namo Kanimo
  4. Ang Tanging Alay Ko. “Aking hinihintay ang ‘Yong pagdarating, Jesus” rather than “pagbabalik, Jesus.”
  5. Unang Alay (Rey Magnaye): Suggest ko sing instead, “Ngayo’y umaasa, naghihintay sa ‘Yo.” Now if your choir sings the Koda, you deliver one solid message if you sing: “Ngayo’y nananalig (umaawit), dumudulog (sumasamba), umaasa (naghihintay) sa ‘Yo.”
  6. One Bread, One Body (John Foley SJ) (sobrang swak)

Communion:
1.      Ginoo, Sayud Ka sa Tanan (Ad-7)
2.      Panahon Na
  1. Adlaw’g Gabii
  2. Panginoon masdan Mo (Danny Isidro SJ/Nemy Que SJ)
  3. Halina o Hesus (Danny Isidro SJ/Nemy Que SJ)
  4. Panginoon hanggang kailan? (Danny Isidro SJ/Fruto Ramirez SJ)
  5. Patience People (John Foley SJ)
  6. The Face of God (Manoling Francisco SJ)
  7. The King of Glory (WF Jabusch) Prioritize Stanza 3 "He gave His life for us, the pledge of salvation. He took upon Himself the sins of the nation." Sobrang swak sa G.

Recessional:
  1. Umanhi ka Mesiyas
  2. Halina Hesus aming mananakop (Danny Isidro SJ/Nemy Que SJ)
  3. A Time Will Come for Singing (Dan Schutte)
  4. Wait for the Lord (Taize)

GLORIA IS OMITTED DURING ADVENT
Lighting of the 3rd Candle (PINK)  in the Advent Wreath: O Come, Divine Messiah or Halina, Jesus

FIRST READING:
Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11
61:1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners;
61:2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
61:3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion-- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory.
61:4 They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.
61:8 For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
61:9 Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD has blessed.
61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
61:11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Psalm 126
126:1 When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.
126:2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."
126:3 The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.
126:4 Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the watercourses in the Negeb.

126:5 May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy.
126:6 Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.

OR
Luke 1:46b-55
1:46b "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
1:48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
1:49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
1:50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
1:51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
1:52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly;
1:53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
1:54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
1:55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."

SECOND READING:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
5:16 Rejoice always,
5:17 pray without ceasing,
5:18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
5:19 Do not quench the Spirit.
5:20 Do not despise the words of prophets,
5:21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good;
5:22 abstain from every form of evil.
5:23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5:24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION OR ALLELUIA:
1.       Ang Ginoo, Among Kahayag - D12 sa Old Cebuano Songbook
2.       Haduol na ang Adlaw - D17 sa Old Cebuano Songbook
3.       Aleluya, Lamdag Ka - sibo kaayo sa Gospel
4.       Aleluya Kami ay Gawin Mong Daan - this is good for Advent as preparation of HIS coming
5.       Alleluia (Cayabyab)

GOSPEL:
John 1:6-8, 19-28
1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
1:7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.
1:8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.
1:19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
1:20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah."
1:21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No."
1:22 Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
1:23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said.
1:24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
1:25 They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"
1:26 John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know,
1:27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal."
1:28 This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

PERSONAL REFLECTION:
Each of us has favorite words from the bible which speak to our heart and give us solace in difficult times.
Last week we heard one of mine: Comfort, O comfort, my people. Every time, I hear this passage form
Isaiah 40:1, I am reminded of Gods love, not only for me, but for everybody. Just a few simple words, but   in them I find the real essence of what God is all about, and I know that I am not alone. God is with me, andGod cares! What more could I want? How awful it would be, if I was all alone, and no one cared. Each of us, no matter how much we are loved by others, needs Gods love, and these word of caring and comfort       from the one that created us really need to be heard, felt, and cherished.

In some ways this mortal life is a lonesome journey. We enter alone, and we exit alone, or so it seems to
those who have no faith. But, God wants us all to know that we are never alone, and that our heavenly
parent is always at our side. Let us hear those cherished words again, and ask God to etch them in our
heart: Comfort, O comfort, my people.

There is no better example of a person who knew the strength and the hope that comes from knowing
Gods loving care and presence, than Mary. How else could she have said: My soul, magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. Think about it for a minute. Mary knew God was with her. She
knew she was loved, and in this she found courage and safety. She could handle anything and everything
always in hope; never complaining, just pondering  and trusting deep in her heart when things went wrong. Marys Spirit was able to rejoice in God, and Gods wants this same joy to be yours and mine so that we
too can say to ourselves, and all that we meet on lifes journey: My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.

This is St. Pauls message to us this Third Sunday of Advent. Brothers and Sisters, he says, rejoice
always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. In truth, Paul knew that this was possible because God was with us.
Without Gods love and Gods presence in our lives this is only a futile wish. But with God at our side, and
in our heart, willing it for us, it can become our reality, our way, if we accept Gods love and comfort into our hearts.

In this weeks Gospel we hear of a man sent by God, named, John the Baptist. A man who testified about
the light so that all might believe through him. As we hear John testimony about the light, we are
reminded  that God is with us - this is what the name Jesus means. As we celebrate Eucharist this third
advent Sunday, let us pray together for a deeper and more fervent faith experience in Gods presence and Gods love. And, let us pray that we will more fully appreciate Gods ultimate act of love for us - his birth,
death, and resurrection.

May our lives be a living proclamation to the world of Gods Love.

OFFERTORY:
1.       Andama ang Dalan
2.       Nagahalad Kami
3.       Diyutay Lang Kini
4.       Ang Tanging Alay Ko
Prioritize Stanza 3. One reinforces the more common message of Advent even more when in Stanza 3 this is sung: Aking hinihintay ang Yong pagdarating, Jesus rather than pagbabalik, Jesus. Nevertheless, pagbabalik can certainly remain, as again this season also has an eschatological
notion.
5.       Panalangin sa Pagiging Bukas Palad (Arboleda & Francisco)
6.       Panalangin Maging Bukas Palad (Rodrigo & Ramirez)
7.       Prayer for Generosity (Arboleda) To give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the
wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and ask not for reward is so John the Baptist.
8.       Dwelling Place (May Christ find a dwelling place in our hearts) (Foley)

SANCTUS:
1.      Santos (Mass III Villanueva)
2.      Santo, Santo, Santo (Francisco-Arboleda-Torres)
3.      Holy, Holy, Holy (Dufford-Schutte)

ACCLAMATION
1.      Si Kristo atong Handumon (Cebuano version of Si Kristo ay Gunitain)
2.      Si Kristo ay Gunitain
3.      Memorial Acclamation (Marcelo-Fenomeno)
      AMEN
1.      Amen (Set 6)
2.      Dakilang Amen (Francisco)
3.      Amen Alleluia (Bayogos)

      PATER NOSTER
1.      Amahan Namo
2.      Ama Namin (Francisco-Arboleda-Torres)
3.      Our Father (Pat-Martell)

      DOXOLOGY:
1.      Kay Imo Man
2.      Sapagkat Sayo ang Kaharian (Francisco-Arboleda-Torress)
3.      For The Kingdom

      AGNUS DEI:
1.      Kordero sa Dios (Pastorella version by Fr. Villanueva) - bibohon man gud ni siya nga tempo

      COMMUNION:
1.          Andama ang Dalan (Ad-2)
2.          Panahon Na (F-14)
3.          Awit ng Paghahangad (Cenzon) Magagalak na aawit
4.          Liwanag ng Aming Puso: Lentish but (...sa amin manahan Ka...)
5.          Pananatili (yayakapain ang landasin...Mo is again terno sa G No. 3)
6.          Empty Space (Foley) So You may one day see my face pero some consider this for the Sacred Heart mas apt. Bagaman mas nauugnay ito sa Kabanal-banalang Puso, this is taking it one step further: If we are anticipative and waiting so much, we might as well wait for the right One. Besides, this song could even help in increasing the longing. My own opinion lang ang last sentence; Id love it if youd
disagree para natu3 tayo lahat thru exchange of reasonable reasons. Ang panget ng English ko, but
you get what I mean.
7. In Him Alone
8. God of Silence (Francisco)
9. Holy Darkness As we await You pero some consider this for the Easter Vigil mas apt.

11. One Thing I Ask (Tirol)
12. This Alone (Manion)
13. One More Gift (Francisco)
14. Prayer of Saint Francis (Temple)

    RECESSIONAL:
1.       Umanhi Ka Mesiyas (Ad-3)
2.       Ang Tawag sa Panahon
3.       Tanda ng Kaharian ng Diyos (Morano & Francisco)
4.       Awit ng Pasasalamat (Hontiveros) Tayoy magagalak
5.       A Time Will Come for Singing (Schutte)
6.       Wait for the Lord
7.       Life Forever More (Ellerton & Francisco)
8.       The Lord is my Light. Prioritize Stanza 2: Your face, Lord, I seek.
