4th Sunday of Easter - Good Shepherd Sunday Year A - April 30, 2023

The readings for the 4th Sunday of Easter Year A (Good Shepherd Sunday) remind us that Jesus Christ leads us through the gate of salvation. In the first reading Peter calls all to conversion. The psalm reminds us that God is always caring for us as a shepherd care for his sheep. The second reading tells us that when we stray, we can return to the Lord. And in the gospel Jesus promises to lead his people to safety and warns us to be cautious about who we follow.

• Jesus as the Good Shepherd: This image is meant to evoke the idea of a shepherd who knows his sheep by name and is willing to lay down his life for them. Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice and follow him, and that he knows them, and they know him. This theme emphasizes Jesus’ love for his followers and his willingness to protect and guide them through life.

• Relationship between Jesus and his followers: This theme is closely related to the first one, as it also focuses on the idea of Jesus’ followers recognizing his voice and following him. The Gospel reading for this Sunday emphasizes the intimate relationship between Jesus and his sheep, and the idea that they can recognize and trust him because of their close connection. Although Jesus used this figure of speech,
the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.

but the sheep did not listen to them.
I am the gate.
Whoever enters through me will be saved,
and will come in and go out and find pasture.
A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy;

3rd Sunday of Easter - Year A - April 23, 2023

The readings for the 3rd Sunday in Easter for Year A encourage us to truly walk the path of discipleship. In the first reading Peter boldly proclaims the Good News. The psalm reminds us that God will guide us along the path of life. The second reading explains that Jesus Christ died so we could have new life. And in the gospel, two disciples encounter the risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus.

• The Road to Emmaus: Two disciples were walking to the village of Emmaus after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, when they were joined by a stranger who was actually Jesus himself. The theme of the Road to Emmaus is about recognizing the risen Christ in unexpected places and unexpected ways.

• Recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread: In the Gospel reading for the 3rd Sunday of Easter Year A, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples in the breaking of the bread. This theme emphasizes the importance of the Eucharist, and that Jesus is truly present in the bread and wine of the Eucharistic celebration.

• Witnessing and Testimony: Christians are called to be witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus, and to share their testimony of how their lives have been changed by their faith in him. This theme is reflected in the reading from Acts, in which Peter proclaims the good news of Jesus’ resurrection to a crowd in Jerusalem.

• Discipleship: Christians are called to recognize Jesus in unexpected ways, to share their testimony of faith, to spread the good news of Jesus, and to study and apply the teachings of scripture in their lives. And he replied to them, "What sort of things?"
They said to him,

"The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;
and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:
they were at the tomb early in the morning
and did not find his body;
they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels
who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see."
And he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, "Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over."
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other,
"Were not our hearts burning within us
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?"
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together
the eleven and those with them who were saying,
"The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!"

what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve,

and put my finger into the nailmarks
and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Now a week later his disciples were again inside
and Thomas was with them.
Jesus came, although the doors were locked,
and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands,
and bring your hand and put it into my side,
and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples
that are not written in this book.
But these are written that you may come to believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,
and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

The Easter readings focus on the goodness, power, and saving work of God throughout history, culminating in the ultimate victory of Jesus over sin and death through his Resurrection. They also emphasize the importance of faith and trust in God, dying to sin and being raised to new life through baptism, and seeking heavenly things rather than earthly ones.

• The Resurrection of Jesus Christ: The Gospel reading proclaims the central event of the Christian faith, the Resurrection of Jesus, which brings hope of new life and triumph over death.

• Death is not the final word: The Resurrection of Jesus assures us that death does not have the final say, and that new life is possible.

• God never abandons us: Even in the midst of suffering and death, God remains with us and offers us hope and comfort.

• New life from death: Through Jesus’ Resurrection, new life is possible, even in the face of death and despair.

• How Easter must change our hearts: Easter challenges us to let go of sin and selfishness, and to embrace the new life and hope that Jesus offers.

On the first day of the week,
Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning,

and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,

“They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
and we don’t know where they put him.”
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter
and arrived at the tomb first;
he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him,
he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,
and the cloth that had covered his head,
not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.
Then the other disciple also went in,
the one who had arrived at the tomb first,
and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the Scripture
that he had to rise from the dead.
