Good Shepherd Sunday - Year B - April 21, 2024

The readings for the 4th Sunday in Easter Year B (Good Shepherd Sunday) demonstrate that Jesus Christ cares for us as a shepherd cares for his flock. Jesus explains that he is the good shepherd who knows his sheep and will do anything to save them.

The 4th Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, Year B, brings together themes that are central to understanding our relationship with Jesus and our identity as Christians. Here are the key themes based on the readings:
  • Jesus as the Good Shepherd: The Gospel clearly portrays Jesus as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep, indicating His sacrificial love and commitment to us.
  • Salvation Through Jesus: Peter's speech in Acts underscores that salvation is exclusively found in Jesus Christ, emphasizing His role as the cornerstone of our faith.
  • Our Identity as Children of God: The letter from John reminds us that we are deeply loved children of God, an identity that the world might not recognize but is foundational to our Christian life.
  • The Universality of Christ’s Call: Jesus mentions He has other sheep not of this flock, highlighting the inclusive nature of His mission and the universal call to be part of one flock under one shepherd.
  • Voluntary Sacrifice and Authority of Christ: Jesus’ assertion that He lays down His life voluntarily and has the authority to take it up again speaks to His divine authority and the voluntary nature of His sacrifice for us.
  • The Role of Faith in Understanding Our Identity and Mission: The readings together invite us to reflect on how faith in Jesus as the Good Shepherd and cornerstone helps us understand our identity as God's children and our mission in the world.

These themes invite us to reflect on the depth of Jesus' love and sacrifice, our identity as beloved children of God, and the call to unity and mission in the vast flock of Christ.

  • Gospel - John 10:11-18: I am the good shepherd who sacrifices his life for the sheep, unlike a hired hand who runs when danger comes. I know my sheep and they know me. 3rd Sunday of Easter - Year B - April 14, 2024

The readings for the 3rd Sunday in Easter encourage us to truly believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and to accept his love. In the gospel the risen Jesus appears to his disciples and helps them understand his death and resurrection.

The readings for the 3rd Sunday of Easter Year B touch on several interconnected themes that are crucial to understanding the Easter season and its significance in Christian life. Here are the main themes:

  • Repentance and Forgiveness: A central theme, especially highlighted in the readings from Acts and the Gospel of Luke, is the call to repentance—turning back to God—and the promise of forgiveness. This theme underscores God's mercy and willingness to forgive sins for those who turn to Him and acknowledge their wrongdoings.
  • The Fulfillment of Prophecy: The readings from Acts and Luke emphasize that Jesus' life, death, and resurrection were all part of God's plan, foretold in the scriptures. This theme connects the events of the New Testament with the prophecies of the Old Testament, showing the continuity and fulfillment of God's salvation history.
  • Witnessing to the Resurrection: The Gospel and the first reading both highlight the importance of witnessing to the resurrection of Jesus. The disciples are called to share the news of Jesus' resurrection and the forgiveness of sins with all nations, emphasizing the role of Christians to bear witness to the truth of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection.
  • Jesus as Advocate and Atonement: The second reading from 1 John presents Jesus as the advocate for sinners and the atonement for our sins. This theme highlights the mediating role of Jesus between humanity and God, and the universal scope of Jesus' sacrifice, which is not limited to a single group but is extended to the whole world.
  • Obedience to God's Commands: True knowledge of Jesus is demonstrated through obedience to His commands, as mentioned in the letter of John. This theme ties in with the idea of living according to God's will as a response to understanding and accepting Jesus' role as our savior and advocate.
  • The Physical Resurrection of Jesus: In the Gospel reading, Jesus shows His physical form to His disciples, eating with them and allowing them to touch Him. This emphasizes the physical reality of the resurrection, countering any notion that it was merely a spiritual or symbolic event.

These themes collectively reinforce the message of Easter as a time of renewal, hope, and spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world.

  • Responsorial Psalm - Psalm 4: Lord, let your face shine on us.

In times of trouble, I call on God, who rescues and listens. His miracles affirm His faithfulness, and His light brings joy to my heart. In His care, I find unparalleled peace and security.

  • Second Reading - 1 John 2:1-5: If we sin, Jesus Christ, the righteous, advocates for us. He atoned for our sins, extending beyond us to the whole world. True knowledge of Him is demonstrated by obeying His commands.
  • Gospel - Luke 24:35-48: The disciples recounted recognizing Jesus by the breaking of bread. Jesus then appeared, offering peace and dispelling fears of his being a specter by showing his hands and feet and eating fish, demonstrating his physical resurrection. 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B - February 4, 2024

We are now on the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B and we are grateful for your support by visiting us here always.

The readings for the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B cause us to reflect on Jesus’ power to heal us, both physically and spiritually. In the first reading, Job laments that he is experiencing so much misery and despair. But the psalm reminds us to “Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.” The Gospel tells how Jesus cured Peter’s mother in law, freed those possessed by demons, and preached in the area.
  • Human Suffering and Quest for Meaning: Job's lament in the first reading highlights the profound struggle of human suffering and the search for meaning amidst life's trials. This theme resonates with anyone grappling with pain, loss, or hardship.
  • Divine Compassion and Healing: Contrasting with human suffering, the Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel emphasize God's compassion and healing power. This theme underscores the Christian belief in a God who cares deeply about human affliction and actively works to restore and heal.
  • Service and Sacrifice in Ministry: Paul's reflections in the second reading on his role as an apostle underscore the themes of selfless service and sacrifice. His commitment to preaching the Gospel without seeking personal gain highlights the Christian call to serve others.
  • The Power of Jesus' Ministry: The Gospel reading showcases Jesus' authority over illness and evil forces, underlining the theme of the transformative power present in Jesus' ministry. It shows the inauguration of a new era of divine action in the world.
  • Solitude and Prayer: Jesus seeking solitude for prayer, despite the demands of his ministry, emphasizes the importance of prayer and communion with God. This theme is a reminder of the need for spiritual nourishment and reflection in the midst of active service.
  • The Role of the Community in Faith: The interactions between Jesus and those he heals, as well as the actions of the disciples, highlight the theme of community in the Christian journey. It shows how faith is lived and experienced within a community, and how the community plays a role in supporting, nurturing, and participating in the mission of the Church.
These themes for the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B collectively offer a rich and multifaceted insight into Christian life, emphasizing the balance between personal spirituality and communal engagement, between human struggle and divine grace, and between active service and contemplative prayer.

  • Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 147: Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.
Praise the Lord for His kindness and mercy. He restores and unites, heals the brokenhearted, and knows all creation intimately. He uplifts the humble, humbling the wicked.
  • Second Reading –1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23: Preaching the gospel is my entrusted duty, not a ground for pride. My reward lies in sharing it freely, adapting to serve all, with the hope of sharing in its blessings.

2nd Sunday of Advent - Year B - December 10, 2023

A big thanks to all of you who always support us here in choirmassguide. We are now on the 2nd Sunday of Advent. Kaya namamasko po kami sa inyo... GCash nalang po nasa gilid ang details :)

The readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent Year B tell us of John the Baptist and his call to repentance. The first reading foretells the coming of John the Baptist. The psalm reminds us that the Lord is kind and just. The second reading encourages us to grow in holiness. And in the gospel, John the Baptist is baptizing people in preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ.
  • Fulfillment of Prophecy: The passage begins by referencing the prophets Isaiah and Malachi, indicating that John the Baptist’s ministry is a fulfillment of prophecy. This theme underscores the continuity of God’s plan as revealed through the prophets.
  • Preparation for the Messiah: John’s role as a forerunner for Christ highlights the theme of preparation for the coming of the Messiah. His preaching and baptizing in the wilderness were meant to prepare the hearts and minds of the people for Jesus.
  • Humility of John the Baptist: John’s declaration that he is not worthy to untie the sandals of the one coming after him illustrates his humility. It sets an example for the proper attitude of a servant of God, acknowledging one’s own unworthiness in comparison to Christ.
  • Baptism as a Symbol of Repentance: The act of baptism in the Jordan River by John symbolizes purification and repentance. This ritual act points to the inner transformation that is required for a renewed relationship with God.
  • Anticipation of the Holy Spirit: John distinguishes his baptism with water from the coming baptism with the Holy Spirit by Jesus. This theme introduces the Holy Spirit’s significant role in Christian life and points to the deeper, transformative work that Jesus will accomplish.
  • Transition from Old to New Covenant: John’s ministry marks the transition from the prophetic tradition of the Old Testament to the new era inaugurated by Jesus. This theme reflects the shift from the law and prophets to the grace and truth brought by Christ.

Entrance:
1.      Andama ang Dalan, which is swak sa gospel
2.      Umanhi ka Mesiyas
3.      Balang Araw (Borres, Francisco)
Suggestion ko lang ‘toh; anyone can very well disagree: Palitan yung ‘Narito na’ng Manunubos, luwalhatiin ang Diyos!’ into ‘Darating na’ng Manunubos, luwalhatiin ang Diyos!’ (JR Medina)
4.      Purihin ang Panginoon. (Prioritize 3rd Stanza: “...Kaya’y Panginoo’y dinggin; ang landas Niya’y tahakin..”)

Readings:
  • First Reading – Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11: Summary: God promises comfort and forgiveness to Jerusalem, declaring an end to her trials. A path is made for the Lord’s glory, as He comes with power and tenderness, like a caring shepherd.
  • Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 85: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
I listen for God’s words, for He promises peace to His people and salvation to the reverent. In our land, kindness and truth, justice and peace, shall unite under His blessings.
  • Second Reading – 2 Peter 3:8-14: God’s time differs from ours; He’s patient, desiring all to repent. The Day of the Lord will bring transformation, urging us to live in holiness, awaiting a new righteous world.
  • Gospel – Mark 1:1-8: Isaiah prophesied a messenger, John the Baptist, who emerged in the wilderness calling for repentance and baptism for sin forgiveness. He foretold of one greater than himself, unworthy even to untie His sandals, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit, not just water.

Offertory:
  1. Gasa sa Gugma (Koro Viannista) good choice
  2. Daygon Ikaw, Ginoong Dios
  3. Gasa Namo Kanimo
  4. Pag-aalay ng Puso (Minsan Lamang) (Nemy & Que) as advent (at least the earlier part) has an eschatological notion. Traces of 32nd and 33rd Sundays in Ordinary Time yata ito. (JR Medina)
  5. Unang Alay (best choice)
  6. We can instantly make this song have an Adventish notion: The last line originally runs: “...Ngayo’y nananalig, nagmamahal sa ‘Yo.” Sing instead, “Ngayo’y umaasa, naghihintay sa ‘Yo.” You then reinforce the message re: anticipation.
  7. Now if your choir sings the Koda, you deliver one solid message if you sing: “Ngayo’y nananalig (umaawit), dumudulog (sumasamba), umaasa (naghihintay) sa ‘Yo.”
  8. I will be so excommunicated by Fr. Rey Magnaye. (JR Medina)
  9. Dwelling Place (“May Christ find a dwelling place in our hearts”) (Foley)
  10. Prayer for Generosity (Arboleda)

Communion:
1.      Panahon na Karon sa Pagbag-o, literally Christians repent during Advent and Lent season. So this is a good choice
2.      O Dios, Ikaw Haduol
3.      Andani, Pag-andam sa Ani, the main keyword is Pag-andam. For his coming we should prepare.
4.      Ginoo, Sayud Ka sa Tanan (Ad-7)
5.      Awit ng Paghilom. (I’d like to believe and comment that Stanza 2’s “sa daang matuwid” calls to mind G No. 3. Ganunpaman, I acknowledge that many people would say that this is a song more apprpri8 for the liturgical season of Lent.) Tsaka “Hanap-hanap Ka ng puso”
6.      Liwanag ng Aming Puso: Lentish but (“...sa amin manahan Ka...”)
7.      O Halina, O Hesus (Isidro & Que)
8.      Panginoon Masdan Mo (Isidro & Que)
9.      Hiram sa Diyos. The first two weeks of Advent are very eschatological.
10.  Pananatili (“yayakapain ang landasin...Mo” is again terno sa G No. 3)
11.  Panginoon Aking Tanglaw (Ramirez)
12.  Panginoon, hanggang kailan? (Isidro, Ramirez)
13.  Panginoon Masdan Mo (Isidro & Que)
14.   Sa Dapit Hapon (Tabuena & Hontiveros) Sing stanza 1 repeatedly.
15.   Patience People (Foley)
16.  The Face of God (Francisco)
17.  Let the Valleys be Raised (Schutte)
18.  O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
19.  The King of Glory (Jabusch)
20.  Empty Space (Foley) “So You may one day see my face” pero some consider this for the Sacred Heart mas apt. Bagaman mas nauugnay ito sa Kabanal-banalang Puso, this is taking it one step further: If we are anticipative and waiting so much, we might as well wait for the right One. Besides, this song could even help in increasing the longing. My own opinion lang ang last sentence; I’d love it if you’d disagree para natu3 tayo lahat thru exchange of reasonable reasons. ??Ang panget ng English ko, but you get what I mean.
21.   In Him Alone
22.  God of Silence (Francisco)
23.  Holy Darkness “As we await You” pero some consider this for the Easter Vigil mas apt.
24.  Hosea (Norbet) Lentish mas kilala, pero if you consider its links to eschatology...
25.  Love is the answer (Hannisian)
26.  One Thing I Ask (Tirol)
27.  This Alone (Manion)
28.  We Remember (Haugen)
29.  Turn to Me
30.  Breath of God: On the one hand, the Holy Spirit was indeed both in 1R and G No. 7. Besides, not too many people would outrightly consider this song as exclusively for Pentecost.
However, I don’t think that this song should be used indiscriminately for all the Sundays of Advent; cguro 2nd Sunday of Advent lang, kasi the Holy Spirit is indeed the love of God the Father for the Son, and of the Son for the Father, i.e., the love that transpires between them: When the Father sees the Son Whom He loves so much, Siya ay napadidighay, at ang nadidighay is the Holy Spirit. Thus, the Holy Spirit is the breath of God, the breath of love, “hininga ng pag-ibig.” (But take note that this does not happen in the time continuum, for the Godhead is not immersed in a time line.) Pero palayo na ito sa thread. My more important point is this: I believe that Breath of God does not deliver the appropriate message on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Sundays of Advent.

Recessional:
1.      Pagpangatagak na Yamog
2.      Bayan magsiawit na (Aquino)
3.      Tanda ng Kaharian ng Diyos (Morano & Francisco)
4.      Halina, Jesus, aming Mananakop (Isidro, Que)
5.      A Time Will Come for Singing (Schutte)
6.      Wait for the Lord
7.      Life Forever More (Ellerton & Francisco)
8.      The Lord is my Light. Prioritize Stanza 2: “Your face, Lord, I seek.”

Hope this will help…Have a nice weekend everyone ðŸ˜Š

Solemnity of the Christ the King - Year A - November 26, 2023

Thank you sa nagsend pala ng 50.00 pangload sa pocket wifi.

The readings for the Solemnity of Christ the King Year A tell us that the kingship of Christ is one of a caring master who longs for us to live together in harmony in his kingdom. The first reading tells of the Lord gathering in his flock and tending to them. The second reading reminds us that everything is subject to Jesus Christ, including death. And in the gospel Jesus tells of the Judgement of the Nations, where those who served him in this life are separated from those who did not.

Some themes for this Sunday:
  • Final Judgment: The gospel describes the final judgment of all nations, indicating a day of accountability for actions during earthly life.
  • Moral Responsibility: The criteria for judgment are based on acts of kindness or neglect, emphasizing the importance of moral and ethical conduct.
  • Corporal Works of Mercy: Feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, and clothing the naked are highlighted as virtuous deeds, stressing the spiritual value of compassion.
  • Identification with Suffering: Jesus says that acts done to “the least of these” are done to him, suggesting a deep spiritual connection between God and those who suffer.
  • Universality: The passage refers to “all the nations,” suggesting a universal scope for these spiritual principles.
  • Social Justice: The emphasis on helping the marginalized connects with themes of social justice and activism.

  • Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
The LORD is my shepherd who meets all my needs, guiding and sustaining me. I will dwell in his house forever, surrounded by his goodness and kindness.

  • Gospel –Matthew 25:31-46: Jesus tells his disciples about the final judgment where people will be separated like sheep and goats. 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A - October 8, 2023

The readings for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time for Year A focus on discipleship and our choice to follow Jesus or not. In the first reading Israel is warned that they must be faithful. The psalm begs God to return to the vineyard and care for it once again. The second reading encourages Christians to continue along the path that Jesus has shown us. And in the gospel Jesus tells the parable of the tenants, who rejected the landowner.

Theme:
  • Parable of the Vineyard: The parable of the vineyard highlights the theme of God’s ownership and care over His creation. The vineyard symbolizes God’s kingdom, and the tenants represent humanity’s responsibility to steward it.
  • Rejection of Messengers: The theme of rejecting God’s messengers is evident as the tenants mistreat and kill the servants sent by the owner. This reflects the historical pattern of disregarding God’s messages and messengers.
  • Sending the Son: The owner’s decision to send his son underscores the theme of God’s ultimate outreach. Sending His Son, Jesus, reflects God’s desire to restore the relationship with humanity through a new covenant.
  • Crucial Choice and Accountability: The theme of choice and accountability emerges as the tenants plot to seize the inheritance. Their decision leads to severe consequences, highlighting the importance of right choices and their consequences.
  • Transfer of Responsibility: The transfer of responsibility from unfaithful tenants to others underscores the theme of God’s plan for redemption. This symbolizes the transition from the Jewish covenant to the inclusion of the Gentiles in God’s kingdom.
  • Rejected Stone and Cornerstone: The reference to the stone rejected by the builders becoming the cornerstone illustrates the theme of God’s sovereignty. This emphasizes that God’s purposes will ultimately prevail, even if initially rejected by people.

Readings:
  • First Reading – Isaiah 5:1-7: “: A friend cultivates a vineyard with great care but gets wild grapes. He questions what more he could have done and decides to abandon the vineyard, letting it turn into a wasteland. This vineyard is an allegory for the house of Israel, where expected justice turns to chaos.
  • Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 80: The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel.
God planted a vine from Egypt, cleared the land, and let it flourish. Then, its walls were broken, making it vulnerable to beasts and trespassers. A plea is made for divine care and restoration so that the vine, representing Israel, will thrive and its people will be saved.
  • Second Reading – Philippians 4:6-9: Don’t worry, but instead bring your concerns to God through prayer. When you do, God’s peace will guard your heart and mind. Focus on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, and lovely. By following this guidance and emulating good examples, you’ll find peace.
  • Gospel – Matthew 21:33-43: A landowner leases a vineyard but the tenants mistreat his servants and kill his son. When asked, the elders agree that the owner will evict these tenants and find new ones. Jesus warns that those who reject the cornerstone will lose the kingdom of God.
