5th Sunday of Lent - Year A - March 22, 2026

 The 5th Sunday of Lent Year A invites us to reflect on life, resurrection, and faith in God’s power. The readings remind us of God’s promise to bring new life and His power over death.

• Resurrection and New Life: God promises to raise His people from their graves and give them new life. Jesus fulfills this by raising Lazarus, showing His power over death and pointing to His own resurrection.

• Power of the Spirit: The Spirit of God brings life and renewal. The second reading reminds us that the same Spirit that raised Jesus will give life to our mortal bodies.

• Faith and Trust in Jesus: Martha shows faith in Jesus even in her grief. Jesus calls her and all believers to trust in Him as the resurrection and the life.

• God’s Glory Revealed: Jesus explains that Lazarus’s death will glorify God. The miracle strengthens the faith of those who witness it, showing Jesus’ identity as the Son of God.

• First Reading – Ezekiel 37:12-14: God promises to resurrect and return His people to Israel, affirming His identity and power. He vows to infuse them with His spirit, assuring fulfillment of this promise.
• Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 130: With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
• From the depths, I cry to the Lord for mercy. If He counted sins, none could stand, but with Him, there is forgiveness, redemption, and steadfast love.
• Second Reading – Romans 8:8-11: Living by human nature cannot please God. True life is in the Spirit, evident if Christ’s Spirit dwells in us. This Spirit brings life to our mortal bodies, just as it raised Christ.
• Gospel – John 11:1-45: Lazarus from Bethany, brother of Mary and Martha, fell ill. Despite their message to Jesus, He delayed His visit, explaining the situation was to glorify God. Upon arrival, Lazarus had been dead four days. Martha expressed faith in Jesus, who declared Himself as the resurrection and life. Deeply moved and troubled by the mourning, Jesus wept, then miraculously raised Lazarus from the dead, strengthening the faith of many onlookers.

4th Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday)- Year A - March 15, 2026

 The 4th Sunday of Lent Year A invites us to reflect on seeing with the eyes of faith. The readings show how God looks at the heart, brings light to darkness, and heals spiritual blindness.

• Seeing as God Sees: God chooses David because of his heart, not his appearance. This reminds us to value inner goodness and to look beyond outward appearances.
• Light and Darkness: Believers are called to live as children of light. This means rejecting sin and letting Christ’s light guide our actions.
• Spiritual Blindness and Sight: Jesus heals the man born blind, revealing spiritual blindness in those who refuse to believe. This shows the importance of faith and openness to God’s truth.
• Faith and Conversion: The blind man’s journey from physical healing to faith in Jesus shows a deep conversion. This challenges us to grow in faith and recognize Jesus as the Son of God.
• God’s Choice and Calling: God chooses David, the unlikely shepherd, to be king. This shows that God often chooses the humble and overlooked to fulfill His plans.
• Courage to Witness: The healed man boldly defends Jesus before the Pharisees. His courage inspires us to stand up for our faith, even when challenged.

The 4th Sunday of Lent Year A challenges us to open our hearts to God’s light and see with faith. It calls us to grow in trust, courage, and love for Christ.

Readings:

• First Reading – 1 Samuel 16:1B, 6-7, 10-13A: Samuel is sent by the Lord to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as the new king of Israel, replacing Saul. Initially, Samuel believes that Eliab, Jesse’s eldest son, must be the chosen one, but the Lord reveals to him that he looks at the heart, not outward appearances, and leads him to anoint David, the youngest son, who is a shepherd.
• Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 23: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
• The Lord is a faithful and loving shepherd who provides for and protects his sheep. The psalmist describes the Lord’s provision of green pastures and still waters, his guidance through dark valleys, and his comforting presence, and concludes by affirming his confidence in the Lord’s goodness and mercy throughout his life.
• Second Reading – Ephesians 5:8-14: Believers should live as children of light, putting aside the works of darkness and walking in the ways of righteousness. The passage emphasizes the importance of exposing and reproving evil deeds, and notes that everything that is exposed by the light becomes visible and that Christ will shine on those who follow him.
• Gospel – John 9:1-41: Jesus heals a man who was born blind, but the Pharisees are skeptical and investigate the miracle. They interrogate the man and his parents, and ultimately cast the man out for declaring his belief in Jesus as the Son of God.

3rd Sunday of Lent - Year A - March 8, 2026

 The 3rd Sunday of Lent in Year A focuses on themes of faith, conversion, and God’s desire to fill us with new life. The readings show us God’s response to human needs and how He calls us to turn to Him with open hearts.

• Spiritual Thirst: The Israelites thirsted in the desert, and the woman at the well thirsted for something deeper in life. God wants to satisfy our thirst for meaning and truth.

• God’s Faithfulness: God provides water to the Israelites in the desert and offers living water through Jesus to the Samaritan woman. These stories remind us that God is always faithful, even when we struggle to trust Him.

• Repentance and Conversion: The Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus changes her life. Lent is a time to repent and let God transform us just as He transformed her.

• God’s Love for Sinners: Jesus meets the Samaritan woman where she is, despite her sins and past. God does not turn away from us but invites us to receive His mercy.

• Jesus, the Living Water: Jesus speaks of the living water that brings eternal life. He alone can fulfill our deepest longings and give us life that never fades.

• Witness and Evangelization: After meeting Jesus, the Samaritan woman goes back to her town and shares her experience. Her witness shows us that sharing our faith can lead others to seek Jesus.

• Peace Through Reconciliation: St. Paul writes about the peace we have with God through Jesus. Lent calls us to seek this peace by being reconciled to God and others.

In Lent, the Church invites us to open our hearts to God’s love and mercy. The readings on the 3rd Sunday of Lent in Year A encourage us to deepen our faith and let God refresh our spirits.

• Gospel – John 4:5-42: In Samaria, Jesus met a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. He asked her for water, leading to a conversation about “living water” offering eternal life. Jesus’s insight into her life convinced her of his prophetic nature. He revealed the future of worship transcending locations, focusing on Spirit and truth. Declaring himself the Messiah, his interaction led many Samaritans to believe in him as the Savior of the world.
